I have a comcast modem that doesn't have wireless capability, so I'm trying to run a wireless connection to the comcast modem using my actiontec gt701-wg. When I hook everything up, the "wireless" light on the actiontec doesn't come on and the PC says there is no wireless network in the area. I've tried turning the equipment on in several different orders with no luck. There's no switch on the actiontec so I'm at a stand-still.

Re: actiontec GT701-WG won't operate wirelessly
In looking on the internet the unit is a DSL gateway. Trying to use it on cable internet is not a real good way to set up your network because I believe the router is waiting for a DSL sync before the services turn on. I would spend the money and pick up a Linksys or Netgear G router, there around $50.

The reason why your internet light is red for the actiontec gt701-wg is because it is not yet configure. You need to access the gui of this router. enter the username and password for your internet connection. You can contact your ISP provider so they can walk you through for the steps on how to configure your new router.
The old router has green light because it was already configured by your ISP provider.
Try a factory reset - make sure you know your ISP login details and settings - the username and password should have been sent to you by the ISP - and all the router settings should be available on their website
Modem’s factory default settings, depress and hold the Reset Switch for approximately 10 seconds. The reset process will start about 10 seconds after releasing the Reset Switch, or until the Power light glows amber.
Otherwise, I have seen a couple of these units do that - and the only solution was to purchase a new one.
You could do it, but it's a bit of a pain in the ***** and probably not worth the hassle. Actiontec DSL gateway was not designed to act as a "proper" router and therefore you won't be able to make it act like one permanently (well, unless there's a hacked firmware out there somewhere ;). Of course, since it runs linux, you can telnet into it and manually set up the ip addresses on both wireless/wired interfaces and the necessary route between them. It will then work as a wireless access point for your comcast cable modem, but any changes will be lost every time you reboot the actiontec. I've done it in the past with similar setup but quickly got tired of having to console the actiontec to add the ips and routes every time it crashed -and eventually got a proper wireless router. So-it can be done, just not easily. Have fun, Raf
Comcast will not support that kind of modem. Comcast is a Cable ISP thus the ADSL modem won't work with them because ADSL modem is for DSL providers. Cable Company uses different protocol than DSL. But Comcast will provide you the cable modem if you subscribe to them.
Flip over your ACTIONTEC and you would see there the default wep key. If you've had it personalized before, you have to open the configuration page of your modem and check for the wep key.
To go to the configuration page, open your internet explorer and type in 192.168.1.1 on the address bar. that is the default address for your actiontec. type in your username and password when prompted. the usual default it ADMIN for username and PASSWORD (lowercase) for password. or you could also try ADMIN (uname)-ADMIN(pword).
click on the wireless settings icon and then click on basic security settings. scroll down on the middle of the page and you will see there your wep key.
if you are unable to open the configuration page because you forgot your username and password, you can reset your modem so that it the uname and password will go back to its factory default settings (admin/password). However, if you are using pppoe connection (authentication using username and password to connect to network) you can lose your connection and you would have to configure your router. so be careful not to press the reset button at the back.
It sounds like you don't have the units connected properly. Make sure you have a cable(wired) from your ethernet card on your pc connected to a wired port on the router. Then plug your router from its yellow port into the modem. Make sure your modem is connected to its Internet interface. Plug in your modem and wait 60 seconds for it to power up. Then power up the router.
At this point you should be able to access the router with the supplied installation CD. Run the setup assistant and it will define your wireless network. When you are through you should have internet access through the wired network. When you are finished you should be able to use the wireless network assuming you have the card installed correctly and the software for the card correctly installed.
