It will show the windows starting screen. And before it loads the desktop, the screen goes blank. Same thing when using the external monitor port. Found a similar problem listed, but I can not see anything with the screen held close to a light.

When your computer hardware appears to power up okay, but the Windows XP operating system won't boot properly, you have to begin a troubleshooting expedition that includes getting into the operating system, determining the problem, and then fixing it. To help you get started on this expedition, here are 10 things you can do when Windows XP won't boot.
Try booting to the safe mode (F8 at boot) and see if you can log in via the safe mode. If you can't, try booting to your Windows CD, go to recovery console and run CHKDSK /R
If you still can't log in, try running diags see if the hard drive lists a failure.
if no hardware failure found, there and none of those solutions work, then re-installing windows will likely be the final resolution
When a PC boots first it checks all of the hardware to ensure all is working properly. The stage two of that is turning it over to the operating system. When it is turned over to the operating system the first thing it looks for is the Master Boot Record which is a small program on your hard drive that starts your operating system. If it cannot find the Master Boot Record or if the boot record is corrupt then the operating system will not load. In order to fix put the WIndows operating system disk into your CD ROM and let it boot to the CD ROM. Allow it to load for a few minutes and it will eventually ask you if you want to proceed with the installation or "repair". Choose repair. This is one option to fix your boot record. Second option is to use Recovery Console. Put the Windows CD in the CD ROM. Click on Start and then Run. In the run box type D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons (where D is your CD ROM drive). Follow the instructions on the screen. You will be at the command line, type in FIXBOOT. This will also fix your master boot record. Follow these procedures anytime you have an operating system load error use the Recovery CD as your last resort. Hope this helps.
