Question about Kenmore Freezer 20.3 cu. ft. Frost Free Upright Freezer

1 Answer

Defroster leaks my refrigerator leaks water from the inside of the unit. i had an technician check the problem. he said it was the defroster that was leaking the water. what should i do? soon i'll have to replace my flooring because of the water. please help with this problem. I am having this same problem with my refrigerator.  We have a Kenmore which was purchased from Sears probably 5-6 years ago when we bought our house.   It is a "refrigerator -freezer with autommatic defrost and top mounted freezer"  There is an icemaker but we do not use (it is not hooked to a water line because it won't reach one in our kitchen.) It's a Kenmore.  The paperwork says it is model #7113 the full model number given inside the fridge says it's model 253.71134103 Anyhow - every week I have to empy the fridge and mop up much water from under my vegetable bins and the top of many of the shelves.  It seems the lower shelves are worse - and the freezer doesn't seem to need defrosting.   There is sometimes a thin layer of ice on one of the shelves. Any help on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

You have a cloged evap. drain. the rf is defrosting properly but with the drain be clogged the water has to go somewhere which is generally in the crisper draws on top and bottom models. two way to clear up this issue. turn rf OFF for at least 48 to 72 hrs. to allow the drain to de-ice or take matters into your own hands and take the back panel off of the freezer and using boiling hot water pour it down the evap. drain tube until it flows like you just flushed a tiolet

We have Frigidaire Upright Freezer. After 6-7 days its stops cooling as its condenser gets ice around it whereas the fan is working good. We clean the ice and it again starts working/cooling.

There are a few possibilities. Freeze-ups are a result of the unit either not having sufficient airflow or the compressor running too long and too often. As you note the fan is good, chances are airflow is not the issue. There are a few quick items that you can check on:

1. Check door seals. Leaks will cause the interior to lose cooling faster and result in compressor overloading.
2. Do not overload the freezer. Too much inside the freezer will cause loss of airflow INSIDE the unit and can cause issues.
3. Avoid putting too much unfrozen material into the freezer at once. It takes a lot of work to remove all the heat from a large amount of material.
4. Avoid multiple opening and closing of the door. Upright freezers are inefficient as they lose all their cold air as soon as you open the door. Chest freezers do better if you must go into the unit often.

Lastly, undercharged refrigerant system can cause the same issue. If you don't have any of the other problems noted, have a serviceman check the refrigerant and fill the system as needed.

STAY IN DEFROST MODE

Hello Santiago;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

In the defrost mode everything shuts down with the exception of the light.

So, lets trip the defrost timer and get your freezer running.

You did not provide a model number which is located on a label on the inside liner wall near the top.

Your defrost timer may be part of your control board.

Let's assume it is not.

In the lower back left hand corner of you unit the is a metal plate with a small slotted shaft. With a large flat head screw driver turn the shaft clockwise on click at a time until your unit starts up. You must do the same thing every 12 hours to turn it off for 30 minutes to allow for defrost until the timer is replaced is replaced.

My upright frost free freezer is leaking water onto the floor.

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You did not provide a model number so I can only be general. Your model number is on a label on the upper side wall.

You have one of three problems.

1.) A bad defrost timer.

2.) A bad defrost Heater.

3.) A frozen drain.

4.) A obstruction/leak - Large block of ice in the upper right hand corner of your cool coil.

I've had the refregerator for 10 months.. All of a sudden water is appearing on the floor next to the refrigerator. Where could it be leaking from?

Pull it forward and seei if the drain pan is either overflowing or empty. If it,s empty, check the drain isn't blocked, causing meltwater to leak from inside. If it's overflowing, check the door seals properly and the defrost settings are ok.

The refrigerator has two halves. One is the freezer side and the other refrigerator Water is leaking from the freezer side. Appears to be a problem with the defroster. I do not have the model #

One of two things is happening, there is a heater inside your condensate line that prevents the water from freezing, this may no be working. You can check this with an amp meter if you have one. Or your condensate line is clogged with sludge which would cause the water to not drain and freeze. You will need to take the drain apart to defrost the ice and blow out your line.

My ice cubes have a funny odor/taste.

Does your refrigerator have a water filter? if it has one it will be in the kickplate/grill below the freezer door. If it has one replace the filter.

Our upright freezer drips water on the floor. We believe the seal is bad since ice also forms inside at the top of the door. Is the seal replaceable or should we buy a new unit?

Self-defrosting refrigerators/freezers dispose of the water generated during the defrost cycle, usually via a tube or channel that directs the water to a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. From the pan, the water normally evaporates.

If the tube or channel is clogged or obstructed, the water backs up and leaks into the inside of the refrigerator/freezer compartment. Then the water builds up at the bottom, inside of the refrigerator. When the water has built up for a time it may spill out of the front of the door opening. To fix this problem, clear the drain tube or channel and allow the defrost water to flow down to the drain pan.

Ice at the bottom of freezer ice at the bottom of freezer, defrost water not draining

When the water has built up for a time it may spill out of the front of the door opening. To fix this problem, clear the drain tube or channel and allow the defrost water to flow down to the drain pan.

The ice and water-dispensing system of your refrigerator is quite complex. Many components work together to provide the ice and water. Aside from a simple problem of a leaky water tube or a jammed ice chute, most other components are not user serviceable. We suggest that you contact a qualified appliance repair technician for such repairs.

Freezer Defrosting

After a defrost cycle the ice around the evaporator melts, that water goes out and lands in a tray under the refrigerator. But sometimes the tube gets clogged and water spills inside the freezer and if enough water accumulates, it will make it to the floor. To fix this problem look for a small hole inside the refrigerator and open it up using a can of compressed air. Hope this helps

Leak inside my whirlpool fridge

I have the same problem with my Whirlpool Refrigerator. Sounds as though the unit is not going through it's defrost cycle properly.
I have narrowed it down to 2 things.
1) The Defrost Timer is bad and may need replacement.
2) The Defrost bar (located underneath the cooling coils in the freezer unit) is bad and may need replacement.

I would check to see if your timer is even running. You can tell by first locating it (could prove to be the hardest part) and look at the little winow on the front. You will see that the internal wheel is moving if it is operational.
Next remove the panels in the freezer unit and see if the drian hole is plugged with ice. That is what I found upon checking this.
I believe what was happening was that the coils would drip and freeze up over a breif period of time. Layer after layer would build up, plug the drain hole and any liquid would find the path of least resistance and flow with gravity. In this case, directly into the refrigerator section.
If this scenario is present, the heater bar may be bad. I only know one way to test that theory.
