What it sounds like to me is, you ran the windows cd and installed it over what was already there with out formatting the drive or partition first.

to start with a clean copy, you have to format the drive, but youll have to delete the existing partition 1st...if your not sure how to do that, just post back and let me know what OS your trying to install.

Sounds like you need to re-run the windows CD as in Boot from it then in the setup you want to delete and recreate the partition.

It will format it from there.

let me know if you have any questions.

How to reinstall windows xp thinkpad x41

How to Reload Windows XP Without Removing Files Deleting system files, modifying the registry and installing incompatible drivers to Windows XP can damage the integrity of the operating system, rendering it inoperable. Virus infections are often responsible for making the aforementioned changes to a system, but employees who have administrative access to the workstation can make deleterious modifications to the OS as well. Reinstalling Windows XP can repair the OS, but if work-related files are stored to the system partition, all of the data will be erased during the installation process. To reload Windows XP without losing files, you can perform an in-place upgrade, also known as a repair installation.

Step 1
Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive and then press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart the computer. Step 2Press any key when prompted to load the contents of the disc. Press "Enter" on the Welcome to Setup screen.
Step 3 Read the license agreement, pressing "PgDn" to scroll down the page. Press "F8" to agree to the terms. The CD will search for previous installations of Windows XP. Step 4
Press "R" to repair the selected operating system. The disc will begin reinstalling the operating system to the hard drive without affecting personal files. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the repair installation. Step 5
Log in to Windows XP and sign on to the Internet when installation completes. Click "Start," "All Programs" and then "Windows Update." Step 6
Click "Scan for Updates" to search for applicable service packs and hotfixes to reinstall to the OS. Step 7
Click "Install Now" to bring the in-place upgrade up-to-date.
Things Needed
  • Windows XP CD

Tip
  • Make sure you have your Windows XP product key (found on the CD cover or on the computer case) available prior to reinstallation.

Warnings
  • If possible, back up your files previous to the installation in case something goes awry during the process.
  • You will need to reinstall all non-native programs and removable devices after performing an in-place upgrade.

I want to know how to reinstall toshiba portege m200

This is in case you cannot boot into windows but you can get into bios:
Open your disk drive. Insert windows operating system disk into your disk drive. Restart your computer.
If you can get to the stage where you can see see bios entry key then keep pressing whatever key it is that you press to get into bios at start up.
Select the option that let's you choose the drive to boot from, mine is in advanced bios options. then go to either something like bios features or change boot drive.select whatever drive represents your CD-ROM drive and select it to be the first boot drive.
then save exit bios, I do this by pressing escape then Y to save and boot from the rom drive.
This will let you restart your installation of windows and
re-format the drive...
If you can boot into windows:
Then either re-format the drive and delete the partition when you do or...
Run a recovery of the system by installing your disk and letting it get to the stage wher it asks what action/task you want to perform and press r when prompted then follow the prompts to repair the files. This might not work though,
you could even try running a disk check as maybe a lucky chance of repair if you can get into windows.
If your PC keeps trying to boot from the CD drive after repair then re-enter bios at start up and change your hard drive back to first boot device to boot into windows.

It's better if you re-format though as repairing windows can be a little tricky.

Booting from a USB Stick

Here you go:

Download the Ubuntu Live ISO (if you dont have it already) and burn it to CD
Restart your computer (booting from the Ubuntu Live CD)
Insert a 1GB or larger USB flash drive
Open a terminal window and type sudo su
Now type fdisk -l to list available drives/partitions (note which device is your flash drive Example: /dev/sdb). Throughout this tutorial, replace all instances of x with your flash drive letter. For example, if your flash drive is sdb, replace x with b.
Type umount /dev/sdx1
Type fdisk /dev/sdx
type p to show the existing partition and d to delete it
type p again to show any remaining partitions (if partitions exist, repeat the previous step)
type n to make a new partition
type p for primary partition
type 1 to make this the first partition
hit enter to use the default 1st cylinder
type +750M to set the partition size
type a to make this partition active
type 1 to select partition 1
type t to change the partition filesystem
type 6 to select the fat16 file system
type n to make another new partition
type p for primary partition
type 2 to make this the second partition
hit enter to use the default cylinder
hit enter again to use the default last cylinder
type w to write the new partition table
Type umount /dev/sdx1 to unmount the partition
Type mkfs.vfat -F 16 -n usb /dev/sdx1 to format the first partition

"Alternately you can try mkfs.vfat -F 32 -n usb /dev/sdx1 (doesn't always work)"
Type umount /dev/sdx2 to ensure the partition is unmounted
Type mkfs.ext2 -b 4096 -L casper-rw /dev/sdx2 to format the second partition
Remove and Re-insert your flash drive
Back at the terminal, type sudo apt-get install syslinux mtools
Type syslinux -sf /dev/sdx1
Restart your computer, remove the CD and boot back into Windows

Using Windows to prepare and move the files to the USB Stick:
Create a folder named USB on your computer
Download UBconvert.zip using this link - http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/UBconvert.zip
Now, extract the files to the USB folder
Move the Ubuntu  ISO downloaded earlier to the USB folder
Click fixu.bat from the USB folder (follow on screen instructions)
Move all files from the ubuntu directory to your memory stick
Reboot your computer and set your system BIOS to boot from USB-HDD or USB-ZIP. Also set the "Hard Disk Boot Priority" if necessary.

You should now be booting into Ubuntu Linux from your USB drive!
