Question about Canon ZR40 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

I have a Canon ZR40. We can't remember anything bad happening to it, it powers up fine, but then anything you view is covered with blue and orange stripes. Like there's a blue and orange striped filter over the lens. Playback is unaffected but as a camcorder it is useless right now. Getting it repaired will be $150 . Any ideas?

The most likely cause for this is a damaged or defective flexible ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the camera body and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

SOURCE: Playback problem on Panasonic NV-GS15

It is probably a dirty head. One camera i had i had to clean it much more often that i wanted to and certainly before any important shoot.

Here is a tip though. Always use the same make of tape (and code). If you do change your tape (or code) then clean the heads before you put in the different tape. this is all to do with "dry or wet" lubrication used on different tapes. i do not know enough about that to comment, but the tip comes form a very good source.

Some people run the whole tape through on record (with the lens hood on) before they use it. I do not think it will help for this problem, but you can try.

SOURCE: Panasonic Mini Dv 203D - vcr playback in striped screen

I have had this problem. Dont despair! It s a cleaning issue or possibly slight moisture issue. They want you to clean the tape heads. Stick a cotton cue tip in there; i didnt use any denatured alcohol or anything... like we used to do with audio cassette tapes. And/or With a little bit of warm dry air (sitting in the sunshine perhaps) it should correct itself in a day or so. Happened to me (at wrong times of course) maybe three times or so. But never even ruined any tapes that I am aware of. Take heart, its a great little machine when cared for. Except I actually, alas! finally droped mine and now cant get the door open! . . . I was using the PV GS150 primarily by that time, but am still hoping to get the DV203 running again, still pics were really no good on it, but everything else was. All these years worked like a charm, except the few times it zebraed out on me briefly.

Camera won't turn on. Flashes red and orange lights by the view finder and blue at the s button. Battery is fully charged. Just use the camera the other day and it worked fine

The Canon G9 has a design defect, two screws fall out inside the camera and short out the fuse. If you've never had it fixed for no power before this is most likely what has happened to your camera.

Do a Google search for "canon g9 no power repair" and you will see a full repair service including return shipping of your camera for just $85.

Hope this helps!

Will not power up in camera mode but does power up in playback mode

A failure to power up in camera mode indicates a problem with the lens. If the zoom or focus motors will not 'home' or 'initialize', the camera will continue to try endlessly.
If you mean that there is no picture but the camera runs otherwise normally (Beep, Start/stop, lights on, menu...), this is an Imager problem. Contact Canon about a repair. Canon may cover the repair for free.
Other things can cause it but this is most common.

There is a flashing red light with a line between on canon ZR40 what does this mean

That is the symbol for the backup battery. It's a button-type battery that keeps enough power to remember the date and time when the main battery is removed. If the icon is lit, it means this battery should be replaced. Check your manual for location and type of battery. If you need, you can view and download the manual here.

Canon ZR40 would not turn on

The battery is probably so dead it is using all the power from the wall supply.  Remove the battery, and run only from the wall supply.
