Model WJSE4150B2WW ser# AF171808G GE washer agitates but won't spin with front cover off motor turns belt in the right direction for just an instant and then stops interior basket can be turned...

When spinning the motor freezes up and will not spin. I released the motor and took off the belt off and the motor ran fine. However the pulley that the belt is also on will not spin the proper direction, only backwards.

Tip

The washing machine is properly draining but will not spin?

There are many possibilities for this problem, but the most common and regular problem seen is as follows:--
There is a lid switch in the washer. The washing machine will not start spinning till the lid is closed. In some cases it has been seen that lid is closed still the washer does not spin. in this cases the lid switch has to be checked. if the lid switch is faulty then the closed lid will not be detected by the washing machine, and it will not start spin cycle.
But if the lid switch is ok checked, then other possibility can be fault in the motor coupler. Many a times the motor coupler is broken .The motor coupler is plastic/rubber kind of material fitted on the shaft of the motor .Check properly if the motor coupler seems cracked, worn out loose or broken then it needs to be replaced to solve the issue. But if motor coupler is checked ok then other possibility for this problem is the spinning belt. If the belt is worn out or loose or cracked/broken then it needs to replace.
Only for GE washers. In GE model washers, there is a clutch used for proper spin speed. If the clutch wears out, it has to be replaced to. But if clutch/belt seems ok. then other possibility is driver motor itself .check if the motor has power if not then the motor is got internally burnt .in this case the drive motor needs to be replaced. but if drive motor is functioning properly then other possibility to be checked for this fault is the transmission shifter and pulley. If the transmission shifter becomes defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. Replacing the shifter is bit time consuming and tough job. you will require proper tools to deal with this problem. But if the transmission shifter is properly working then other basic possibility to check is the spin bearing/basket drive. The part may be rusted ot got worn out completely. So the inner tub is not spinning freely inside the outer tub. If this is the case then you will hear a loud squiring/chirping sound during the spin cycle. So the bearing fault will be easily identified. Before replacing the spin bearing check if the bearings are got dried up or they are worn/rusted. If dried then apply bit greasy material on the bearings and check out. But if still the noise it needs replacement. But if the bearings are rusted/worn out then it needs replacement. That is confirmed.
This will help.Thanks.

Ge frontload washer seems like it is not aggitating... what would be the problem???

Hello there:

The first thing to check when your GE washer is not agitating, is the belt. Let me tell you how to check the belt & the clutch with out having to take the washer apart.

The belt: Set the timer in the spin cycle and pull the timer knob to turn the washer on.
If the washer drains the water and then spins the way that it should, this tells you that the motor, belt & clutch are not the reason why your washer won't agitate.
A broken belt could be the reason your washer is not agitating or spinning.

The agitator: After making sure that the belt, motor & clutch are working ok, lets check the agitator.
The agitator uses a plastic agitator coupler that is couple to the transmission shaft by using splines cut in the coupler and on the transmission shaft.
Too much usage or overloading the washer too many times will wear the agitator coupler splines. With out the splines the coupler could not be coupled to the transmission shaft and that could be the cause why your washer is not agitating.

The clutch: A bad clutch could also be the reason the washer won't agitate or spin. Usually when the clutch is bad the washer will be noisy, like when you have bad brakes on your car.

The transmission: The transmission could be the reason your washer is not agitating. A common problem with the transmission is oil leaking right on top of the motor pulley and the belt.
As you can see, there could be different reasons why your GE washer is not agitating. You just need to keep checking each part until you find the problem and replace the part responsible.

My GE washer won't spin or agitate

check the motor capacitor if your motor doesn't turn when powered, otherwise the "wig-wag"coil could be faulty, these coils shift your transmission for different cycles

Won't Spin

CHECK TO SEE IF SMALL CLIP ON BOTTOM OF PULLEY HAS FALLEN OFF. IF CLIP FELL OFF, THE PULLEY MIGHT OF SLIDE DOWN AND MOTOR SHAFT IF SPINNING. PUSH PULLEY UP AND ON END OF SHAFT ARE NOTCHES WHERE CLIP SLIDES ON. GE RECOMMENDS YOU REPLACE IT. MACHINE NOT LEVEL OR CLOTHES NOT BALANCED PROPERLY CAN CAUSE CLIP TO FALL OFF. HOPEFULLY THIS INFO HELPS.

if you have a rubber smell that means that the belt is burning through. Several problems can be the case.
1 bearing of the drum ( check if it turns freely if so the bearing is ok)\
2 the belt is worn and need to be replaced.
3 carbon brushes in motor are worn
4 bearing in motor is gone

open the backside of the machine and check belt.
think that is your problem
