the ice maker unit is on the front of the refer - there is a sq box where the wire turns on the ice maker when it set in the down position (ready to make ice)

there is no frost near or on the ice maker area

the ice maker may need a new turn on switch or is not engaging some how

why do I need to take off the refer back panel - it is no way connected to the ice maker that I can see when I open the freezer door - I don't need to de-frost the unit nor create heat

  • mtararat Oct 12, 2010

What about the box that is located at the front of the ice maker - How much is does that unit cost - It seems a switching problem and not a frost/heater thing

Since there is no frost why am I looking at the back of the unit?

Do you have filters for this refer?

There is a website that, when you enter your exact model number, will provide diagrams and parts lists of your refrigerator, and you can look at the icemaker parts. Here is the site:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/
Here is a website that talks about this problem, and provides a link to troubleshoot the Whirlpool icemaker:
http://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/whirlpool/5464-whirlpool-side-side-not-dispensing-ice.html
If I remember correctly, you can order a kit if need be.
Hope this gets you fixed up.

If you have filters, change them The date used is for average conditions only, and you might be due now. The condenser coils under the machine should be cleaned, and your manual should cover that for you. The machine should be turned off or unplugged when performing that.

try replaced the ice cube unidt; I also had a problem with the flapper ice cube door on the outside ice dispenser. Ice cubes would get stuck in the door and would not drop into the cups. This was a lot tougher to fix, but I like figuring things out. Turns out I had some ice that got stuck in the flapper and some how it melted and froze back up to lock the flapper. When the motor came on it sheard a shear pin in a coupling just off the drive motor. I made a home made shear pin and put it back together and all work great now. It was a bit of work to take it all apart and to tell that the motor was good and the relay was working right.

Keep us updated.

Hello, All you have to do is to
Take off the back panel in the freezer. 1/4" screws. Use a nut driver or ratchet and socket with an extension.
2. Behind the frost is the evaporator and the defrost heaters. One heater in the middle and one at the bottom. They are glass tubes. If you can see the bottom heater that is great. If not use a hair dryer and defrost only the very bottom to expose the lower heater only.
3. Now in the refrigerator section at the top where the controls are, take off the long plastic piece to expose the timer. The timer should be on the right hand side and have a little circle that is slotted. Get a flat screwdriver and turn that timer slowly clockwise just until it clicks and the refrigerator turns off. This will put it into defrost.
4. Now look at that heater that you exposed and see if it glows and gets hot. If it does, then the timer is bad.
5. If the heater doesn't come on then go ahead and defrost the rest of the evaporator with the hair dryer. This will take a little while. Don't poke at the evaporator!!!
6. Once totally defrosted look at both heaters. They should look like clear glass and see a silver coil running through them. If they look discolored at all then the heaters are bad. The heaters come as a complete assembly with the defrost thermostat which clips onto the evaporator.
7. If the heaters look okay the only way to know for sure if they are bad is to check continuity with a meter on the plug at the end of their wiring harness. If you can check that then you can splice in a new defrost thermostat to solve the problem. However the best thing to do is replace the heaters and defrost thermostat . It is easy to install.
Follow these steps and this will solve your problem.

Whirlpool model # ed5vhexvq1 side by side ...ice maker will not dispense ice..water works but it sounds as if there is no power going to icemaker from dispenser

Does the icemaker bucket has ice cubes. If yes then your problem is in the dispensor. If no ice cubes on the icemaker bucket then your problem is with the ice maker unit.

Let say Ice cubes on the ice maker bucket and dispensor makes noise when pressing for ice cubes. Then either your ice dispensor flapper is frozen or may be ice cubes in bucket may have defrost and frozen again sticking together.

Icemaker makes lil ice cubes now could this mean the line is clogged?

Would not expect you to ask this question but yes you are right cajunboudoin, an obstructed water line by either a defective water control valve, water filter beyond its useful life or a crimped water supply line will cause the ice cubes to be small during drop of ice cubes into ice bin. Fact is with Whirlpool the water valve is set to remain open filling ice maker for around 7 seconds. If water is moving slow filling the time will be to slow for the flow, If anyone has a good question you do but I would always want everyone to provide their model number, Click Here=> Whirlpool Ice Maker Troubleshooting Thanks Sea Breeze

My whirlpool refrigerator model # is no longer making ice consistently it will drop a few cubes every now and then. the lines are clear and no blockage what could be the problem?

Scale builds up in older icemakers and some of the cubes stick and don't eject.
Check your ice maker after it dumps and see if its keeping some of the cubes and
not ejecting them.
There are cleaners for the Icemaker. Call your local Parts Store.
also
Check Temp inside freezer. It has to be down to about 10 or 15 degrees
See if water is in icemaker.
Pour water in Ice Maker and wait to see if it ejects.
If it ejects theb you need to replace water valve in rear bottom of fridge(Its the part that
attaches to water line out of wall)
If it doesn't eject then it is a faulty Ice Maker.

Hello: I hope that you can help. The ice maker on this model (et21dk) is spitting out water as well as cubes. As a result, my tray is a frozen lake of cubes. How do I fix this? Thanks. Ben My...

Ben open your freezer section and reach to the very back and top of your ice maker where the water inlet tube is located. Use your finger and check for ice formation near the end of the water inlet tube where the ice maker plastic water channel is.

If there is ice in that area unplug your unit and use a hair dryer to thaw out that area. Try not to keep the hot air blowing in the same place when your using the hair dryer so as not to melt any plastics. This some times just happens all by it self that there is ice formation in the water inlet area. While the unit is unplugged use the hair dryer to free your ice tray also.

Once you restart the unit it can take longer than usual before you have ice cubes again. Not more than 1 day. If you continue to have ice formation in your freezer section then your ice maker has and internal failure of either the water control micro switch or actuation lever. The ice maker can be repaired but the cost will be about 60 percent of the cost of a new icemaker..

Our ice machine does not make full ice cubes. they are small and not complete, they are full of holes.

The icemaker requires a water pressure of 1.5 - 8.5kgf/cm2. It is acceptable if the water supply fills a cup of 180cc with water in 3 seconds. The icemaker produces small cubes if the water fed into it is not enough and lumped together if too much water is supplied. In order to obtain the desired size of ice cubes, the amount of water supplied to the ice maker needs to be adjusted. Adjust the valve supplying water to the icemaker or the unit in general in such a way that right amount of water fills the ice tray.

Ice Maker has ice forming underneath where ice cubes drop. It is leaking water from somewhere?

The water inlet valve on the back of the unit where the water supply comes in can have a slow leak and will cause ice to buildup and block the fill tube. Disconnect the ice maker line from the valve and watch to see if it has a slow drip. It doesn’t take much to eventually block the fill tube.
The valve can leak because of sediment in the water preventing it from closing or low water pressure.

Get me the model number. Put tap water in ice maker tray and make sure arm is down. Let it freeze. Wait and see if the ice will drop, this should allow water to come into the ice maker for another run. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Whirlpool ice dispenser not working, but water is

There are three common problems with icemakers:

There's no ice
Small or too few ice cubes
Specks in the cubes
Note: If your repair problem isn't listed, click here to email the RepairGuru. He will give you the help you need.

There's no ice If your ice maker has stopped producing ice completely, check these, in this order:

  • It may be turned off. Look for the wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If the wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. If so, try one of these:

    • If your ice maker has a small red plastic lever, lower it to lower the wire.

    • If there's no plastic lever, simply lower the wire.

In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again. Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts! Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary.

  • The ice maker head assembly may have broken parts. Look to see if the gears are broken. Check to see if the small plastic arms that rest against the ice rake are broken. If the ice maker head assembly is modular and you've found broken parts, you can just replace it.

Small or too few ice cubes If the ice maker is producing ice poorly--making small cubes or too few cubes--you probably have a clogged water line, a defective water-inlet valve, or a defective ice maker mold thermostat that isn't cycling properly. Check these:

  • The water line that's attached to the back of the refrigerator. Make sure you have good water flow. If the flow is poor, repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water.

  • The water-inlet valve. Replace it if it has failed.

  • Check the freezer temperature. If should be 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker mold thermostat. Make sure that it's cycling properly.

Specks in the cubes If you find black or gray specks in your ice cubes, have a look at the ice cube tray. If the protective coating is peeling away, the most economical solution is to completely replace the ice maker.

ICE MAKER NOT WORKING CORRECTLY

Hello deloreslovat
welcome,

You said ,your ice maker makes the ice but does not drop it into the bucket. It just leave it in the upright position in the ice maker device. It also seems to not be making all of the ice cubes only a portion of them.

Here are somethings to check that may cause this

The ice cubes are hollow or small
NOTE: This is an indication of low water pressure.
Water shutoff valve not fully open? Turn the water shutoff
valve fully open.
Kink in the water source line? A kink in the line can reduce
water flow. Straighten the water source line.
Reverse osmosis water filtration system connected to
your cold water supply? This can decrease water pressure.
See “Water Supply Requirements.”
Questions remain regarding water pressure? Call a
licensed, qualified plumber.

Let me know if this helps.
