Question about Apple PowerBook G4 Mac Notebook

1 Answer

My Powerbook G4 internal is almost full, which is why I was backing up a couple of days ago. I was removing various large programs I don't use. My Trash would no longer empty, I could not print and tried to re-install my Lexmark 2600 software. When I was asked to re-start ... I got Problem #1- It will boot to white screen with apple logo and spinner, then to blue with spinner ... and that is as far as it will go. For hours. I can boot with Alt+Apple+O+F and reset the nvram, then reset all. It returns to problem #1. I have a FW external with a system, (and fortunately a recent files backup), which usually gets me past problems, but when I boot with the Options key, I get the correct screen, choose the External, but then return to problem #1. I can boot to the single user screen to enter 'applejack', but it does not respond. Any ideas?

Take the RAM out and reinsert and see if that does anything. Install RAM you know that works into the two slots and see if that does anything.
Install disc 1 of the 2 gray discs and press the option key to boot from the disc-Then go into the disk utility section-then click on repair disc permissions-then click on repair hard drive disc and see if that does anything.

OSX has become unreliable.
You could spend hours troubleshooting, or simply backup and re-install from disks, takes about 40 mins

How do i back up a power book g4? What application do I need to do the back up?

Suchisart,
If you want a stand alone backup solution, you can download a free program called "Carbon Copy Cloner" and purchase a USB 2.0 external hard drive. You can use the CCC software to backup the entire contents of your Powerbook's hard drive or just selected files to the external USB hard drive.

If your Powerbook is unable to boot into OS X and you need to recover the files that are on the internal hard drive, you can boot the Powerbook into "Target Disk Mode" and transfer the files via firewire cable to another Mac. To do this do the following.
  1. With both Macs off connect them with a firewire cable.
  2. Turn on the Powerbook and hold down the "T" during startup.
  3. Once the large icon shows up on screen your in "TDM".
  4. Turn on the other Mac and login to your account.
  5. The Powerbook's hard drive should mount on your desktop.
  6. You'll be able to transfer your files from the Powerbook's hard drive just like you would an external hard drive, thumb drive, etc.

Don't forget to vote and leave us some feedback. :)

DVD player skips audio and/or frames

PowerBook G4 is at least a five-year-old machine at this point. A DVD drive can **** in lots of dust in five years. Try hooking up to an external DVD drive. If it plays the same discs with no problem, you need a cleaning or replacement. Frankly, an external DVD drive is cheaper than replacing your internal drive.

Need Mac G4 laptop schematic manuel

Not sure if you want an actual circuitry schematic, or a internal parts guide.

A manual for field-replacing just about every component inside your Powerbook can be found here.

I expect that circuitry schematics are much harder to come by, and are actually likely to be protected by trade secrets.

Ibook G4 14" 1.4mhz

On an Apple system, this is an indication that it thinks there is little or no battery left and goes to sleep to protect data loss. Your battery might be going bad (showing a full charge, but lasting for only a few minutes) or there may be a problem with your power supply.
