Have you considered NOT connecting the camera to the computer?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive.

Having gone over five months without a response, I assume my suggestion to use a card reader eliminated the need for a driver.

I need a driver so I can download pictures from my card in the Nikon Cool Pix S4000 to my pc. Where do I find that driver? tbb

Hello thomasbramse,

You can get software from nikonusa..
It have two type of software you need.
1. ViewNX (agrement and choose your OS)
- application for sorting, organizing, viewing, and applying minor edits to images captured by digital cameras.

2. ViewNX 2 (window)
-all-in-one application for image transfer*, browsing, sorting, and quick editing

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, if you have card reader, you also can use it. I'm know that is not as easy if just use wired connect between pc to camera.
However, it more readable and faster.

Loss of picture and video file while transferring to a computer... how to recover data?

I have had success with this article...
Digital camera recovery

You have to use a usb card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the camera memory card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.

Hi, you will have to use another system that does not have restrictions to software.
Or you will have to Run/install a new windows that doesn't select application. Like windows Xp,or windows Vista. Am sure that will do.

Take care.

I am trying to download from the Nikon Coolpix L4 camera to my PC which is running on Windows Vista. I have downloaded the PictureProject software but the PC is not seeing the camera.

Did the camera come with a CD or DVD which had software on it? DId it also have drivers, such that when you plug the camera into a USB or other type of port, the PC will recognize the camera?

Frequently, the problem is that the camera is not "seen" by the computer, due to the drivers having not been installed.

Without those drivers. - software which enables the communication between the two devices - you won't be able to transfer the photos from the camera to the PC. And often, the drivers are specific to the version of Windows you are using.

So, if you use Windows Vista Home Premium, but have installed drivers for Windows XP Pro, there may be a miscommunication from that simple error.

Go back and read the installation guide, and make sure that you have not skipped a step, inadvertantly.
