Question about KitchenAid Architect Series KEMC308KSS Electric Double Oven

1 Answer

KEMC308KBL01 I just had this unit installed - brand new. Everything was fine, both lights came on in the oven and microwave. After trying the microwave door a few times, I noticed the light went out. I tried to use the microwave, and get the "door" error. The oven works. This unit has never been used before. Could opening and closing the microwave door blow a fuse? I replaced one of the microwave door switches, and still the "door" error. Where would the 15 and 20amp fuses be located in the unit and what is a "cavity tod"?

Well, it looks like the door switches, fuses or the TOD may not be the culprit. While looking for the fuses, and have taken apart most of the unit shroud, I did find the 20 amp fuse on top of the microwave. Then I noticed the burn mark where the brown wire from the 20 amp fuse crosses through a metal support, going to what might be the TOD (thermal overload device?).

The wire was installed too tight and cut through on the metal edge. And this unit is brand new.

If anyone can tell me for sure where the 15 amp fuse is located, I'd be most grateful.

The electric company did one of those blackout things. When the electricity came back on and we set the time, you can barely see the display. Everything else works fine.

Most likely the lcd will need to be replaced...there are 2 lights on the clock control board and what happens is the display light bulb goes out and it is soldered onto the board. if you have some circuit knowledge the light can be desoldered and a new one installed ,but if not you will have to replaced the clock assembly on the unit.... not sure what brand you have as you did not post...
www.sears.com hit the parts direct link on the top of page and enter the model number and a parts diagram will come up and availability and price...

This KitchenAid combination wall oven and microwave unit was purchased in 2002. Except for having to replace a fuse in 2004, it worked fine until the microwave started acting up recently. In September...

Good Question. I work on all brands of appliances, and I swear by KitchenAid-Whirlpool appliances. That being said, I do not recommend oven-microwave combinations, because the ovens will last 30 to 40 years, but the microwaves start having major repairs from 6-10 years on. I would bite the bullet and put in a separate Panasonic microwave (with an inverter) and a seperate KitchenAid Oven. You also need to install a 2000 Joule or higher surge protector, for your microwave oven. Panasonic microwave ovens are better than the KitcheAid ovens at this time.
I would suspect that the touch panel-control board failure may have been caused by the repairman, just because the timing is a little too close to the mag repair. No way to tell you for sure, and I myself have had control board failures the same day that we changed a light bulb, so anything is possible. Usually a factory defect is going to show up before 8 years. In the last 4 years in the greater Seattle area, 70 - 80% of our business is from power surges hitting the electonics in the different appliances, so this could also have been what has caused your repairs. On a 240 volt Oven, the only way to protect it from power surges is to have a whole-house surge protector installed on your house electrical panel. You still need to have individual surge protectors, above 2000 joules, for your appliances that are 120 volts. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

New oven won't work

cobrapilot sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Some where in the oven the contacts going to the oven probe are closing. This could be wiring going to the probe missing insulation and hitting the sheet metal, or the probe socket itself closed. I usually see this after the unit is in use, not right after install. Have you tried to cook a roast or such in the probe mode to see if it will work? For the oven may work just fine then. You are correct about your last line, until service resolves this issue, you have just an expensive microwave. Also as a side note, be sure an be there when the tech showes up. They may just try to say we need a part and not actually attempt to fix your unit. I am not sure what area you are in, however try Olson Appliance Service, He has a website, he is authorized Kitchen Aide service and maybe he can help.
