I just bought a new GE refrigerator and it was laying down for approximately 30 minutes during transport. Please let me know how long I need to leave it standing upright before I turn it on.

Hi,
Here is a tip that I wrote on moving refrigerators...if you did not do it thisway then you may well have ruined a perfectly good refrigerator.

Moving a Refrigerator What is the best way

If you already have moved it wrong, you can sometimes get it working byplugging it in and unplugging it a number of times with an hour or so inbetween.

Moving my fridge on it's side or at an angle

You can lay it down but if you do, when you stand it up, wait 24 hours before you plug it in to turn it on. The reason is because the oil in the cooling system has to settle after being layed down.

GE model GTS22WCP can I lay it on it's side or back to transport?

it is not recommended to lay an appliance with a compressor, the reason is that the compressor oil will run to one side and the appliance will not function properly. i have heard that if laid down the make sure to stand the appliance upright for several days before plugging it in.

As far as I know, you can transport a refrigerator laying down but you should leave it upright for 24 hours BEFORE you plug it in.

Moved unit, wont get cold

did you transport it upright or laying down.... depending on who you talk to you will get a different answer... i have been in the appliance business for 18 years and have to say the more i hear they are transported laying down the more i hear troubles... either way after transported or moved they should be left sitting for approx. 24 hours to allow all the oil to settle back down,,,also could have developed a leak in the sealed system one of the refrigerant lines leaking.

I just sold my Magic chef refrigerator (20.8 cu ft). It was 2 years old . I plugged it in for the buyer. It got cold as it worked perfectly. the buyer said he was going to lay it down to transport it...

i have been i the appliance service industry for approx. 18 years and everytime i see someone lay a refrigerator down or talk about it i literally cringe.... it can be done and sometimes will work ,but what happens if it does not sit upright and notice i said and all the oil runs back down it will fail everytime.... the oil gets in the evaporator and then will not run correct when the compressor comes on it pushes that oil through system and will clog capillary tubes and or slug unit creating it not to pump properly.... guarantee this is what happened to the unit... if it indeed worked fine before you sold it he either allowed oil to saturate the evap coil or something in the sealed system broke in transport causing freon to leak out...

If a refrigerator lays on its back during transporatation (1hr) and doesn't cool after it gets pluged in, what should one do? I have already let it sit over night and now only the freezer is getting cold...

Hello there :
I will have to start out with a question for you after you had it laying down for the 1 hr did you leave it set for the minimum of 30 min or did you just plug it in and then after it did not perform right than did you unplugged it for the over night
cause if it is plugged in right after transportation the txv valve does not have enough time to allow the refrigerant to expell from the valve and upon restart this valve can fail leaving the freezer running ok but not the refrigerator Please keep me posted on this ok
Best regards Michael

I need to know if it is possible to transport side by side refrigerators laying flat. or almost flat. This will be a short move for about 1/2 hour.

Hello, Yes you can move your side by side laying on it's back..it is most important though that when you have it in it's new place you leave it unpluged for 24 hours so the oils can run back into the compressor. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again...Mike
