Question about Hoover Tempo Widepath Upright Vacuum - Blue

Open Question

Hoover Mach 6 U5198-900 vacuum roller brush won't turn. I had opened the bottom to clean hair off the roller. the belts are not broken. When I closed it and turned it on, now the roller brush won't turn. I can push and turn it by hand, but not easily. Then I noticed the brush on/off switch is turned off, but when I step on it, it won't turn on. I was thinking I let something get out of place when I opened the bottom, but can't see what.

Either the brush rolls are bad, ends are bad, or the gear housing/motor asm. is bad and will have to be replaced. ee84874.jpg

Try going to hoover.com and either email them or there is a number that you can call, this is hoover direct, so someone there should be able to help you. Have your model and serial numbers and purchase date handy in case they ask. It also has a 2 year warranty on it. So if you bought it in the fall of 2006, then you have until the fall of 2008. I would take it to an warranty servicer and get it repaired before the warranty runs out.

SOURCE: Brush roller won't turn

Hi.

Your Dyson will have A clutch unit this engages the brush roller when you pull the handle back to vacuum.

Check the clutch control knob which is at the bottom left side of machine looking from the front rotates to drive position when handle is pulled back.

If it doesnt turn the knob by hand to drive.

If you still have no brush rotation after doing all this then either the clutch is faulty or the second belt which goes clutch to motor has snapped & will need replacing.

There are service manuals available for these repairs at this site
http://dysonmanuals.llc.nu/index.htm

Or from Ebay.

Mine was under warranty and they replaced the whole assembly for free. Apparently a quality and/or design problem.

I'm getting no suction and the brushes are not rotating

Hello! If you are using the cleaner on carpet, it is necessary for the brushes to rotate to assist the motor with maximum pick up. If your brushes are not spinning check the belt to make sure it isn't broken or stretched. The belt will need replacing about once a year. Below are steps for checking the belt on your U5399-900.

1. Place handle in low position and turn cleaner over so bottom side is up.
2. Remove the 4 screws. Lift off bottom plate.
3. Inspect the belt for rips and tears. If it is damaged in any way, broken or stretched replace the belt

This unit takes belt 38528033. Be sure you replace belt with genuine Hoover parts. Here is a link where you may go to order a replacement belt.

Our brush doesn't rotate anymore on our U5402-900 vacuum cleaner. What are common causes of this?

The number one cause of brushes not rotating is a broken belt. If you remove the four screws holding the bottom plate, you'll see a short, wide rubber belt that goes around the roller.

If this is broken, it's easy to replace. They do break because of age and wear. One of the leading causes of breakage is when the roller gets something - a curtain cord, for example - wrapped around it. If you don't immediately shut off the vacuum & remove the cord, the belt will continue to try to turn the roller (which can't turn), and this generates a lot of heat in just a few seconds.

The number two cause of brushes not rotating is, as suggested above, something jammed & wound around the roller. It's always a good idea to turn the vacuum over periodically and clean the roller... including using scissors or a knife to snip & remove wound hairs & threads. A clean and healthy roller will help to keep your belt happy!

On hoover steam carpet cleaner, the brushes do not rotate on low or high settings.

Follow these steps if the Brushes Fail to Spin
•If the brushes on your Hoover carpet cleaner fail to spin, there may be a problem---some sort of blockage---with the suction or with the belt that turns the brushes.
Turn the Hoover carpet cleaner over, and inspect the brush area. Debris, strings, or pet hair may be tangled in the rollers, keeping them from turning. Use a pair of scissors to cut away any obstructions in this area. Flip the Hoover carpet cleaner back over, and turn it on to see if cleaning the rollers has solved the problem.
To check the belt, turn the Hoover carpet cleaner over, and remove the bottom plate screw with a Phillips head screwdriver. Investigate the belt area to see if it is broken or has somehow slipped off. If it is broken, you can order a part from Hoover.com or from many of the other online parts stores.
When the belt arrives, simply slide it on in place of the broken belt, reattach the bottom plate and turn the Hoover carpet cleaner right-side up. Turn it on to test your solution.

Brush is not engaging when vacuuming. If lifted

therre are usually aprings that hold the brush in position or a spacer thaqt turns when you adjust the height. turn the vacuum over and remove the plate covering verything. make sure your unplugged first. it usually takes about 5-6 phillips head screws. look for loose ,broken or missing parts. make the the roller is taken out and is carefully cleaned of all hair etc esp that just at the edge of the roller where it meets the monting devices. the hair and debris often gets stuck there and once removed works much better. also make sure the belt is not stretched and is slipping on the brush. if it is replace it. good luck.carefully reassemle the parts you removed being very aware of what postiotn everything was in when you took it apart. make sure everything has proper clearance and then test your vacuum. if you find broken or missing parts replace them first ofcoarse.

The roller brush will not turn. The belt is not

Hello,

Sometimes the belt can stretch cause the roller to not turn. Also make sure the roller brush is free of any debris.

Use this link to access your vacuum to change belt or clean the roller brush.

The brush doesn't turn when the machine is running

Hello. Here are some possibilities:
1. Your belt is broken
2. your roller brush end bearings are bound by hair or string.
3. Or both!
Unplug the vacuum, flip it upside down, manually turn the roller, is there resistance? If not, the belt is broken, and the roller is okay.

Hoover mach 5 turns off after 10 minutes of use

I have had problems with the belts on my Mach 5 overheating (smell of burning rubber) and also with the motor overheating and shutting down.
I learned the hard way that one of the issues might be that the roller/brush on the bottom of the unit has a metal bearing inside the roller/brush that can become clogged with hair (both human and pet hair) which effects performance of the unit.
Another item to check is if your dust filter is not plugged up which is located behind the removable dirt cup. This is the cup that you remove that collects the dust/dirt/hair from your floor. Take the removable dirt cup out by depressing the gold button and then look behind where the dirt cup sits for filter. This can be cleaned out by washing it with soap and water in the sink but make sure you let it dry overnight before placing it back in the machine. This probably causes some of the overheating when not enough clean air is passing through the machine.
It’s fairly easy to fix.
Lay the vacuum on the floor so that you can see the roller/brush. Then remove the phillip head screws that hold the protective plastic plate over the roller/brush. (There are about 6 screws that hold this plastic protective plate in place) Also, you will be removing the (1) screw that also holds the plastic plate over the belts. There are (2) belts that you can remove and when in doubt replace these (2) belts for around $9.00.
Once you have the protective plastic plate off that covers the roller/brush disconnect the belt is around the roller. Take the roller and cut off any hair that is wrapped around the roller. Next, grab the roller by each end and twist the ends caps and (1) of the ends will unscrew. Once you have unscrewed one of the ends remove any hair or dust that is trapped under this cap. (Be careful not to lose the small metal washer that sit on top of the bearing)You will notice under this cap is a metal bearing that can become clogged and jammed with hair. The hair should come out fairly easy and allow the brush to spin fairly easy once you have screwed the end caps back in place test that it spins freely. If it doesn’t spin freely replace the roller/brush with a new one for about $23.00.
When you put the belts back on the thick rubber one (Belt # 40201-271) has probably become stretched and should be replaced for about $3.00. The small diameter belt that goes over the roller/brush probably does not usually need to be replaced and does not usually fit very tight. I have heard that people will take the small roller/brush belt and turn it upside down to get a better fit.
I just did this on my Mach 5 and it runs like a new machine. I did end up replacing the roller/brush head.
Hopefully you will find this useful.

Self propel not working, burning smell

Flip the vacuum cleaner over and check the roller brush. Is it full of string and hair? If so, unscrew the four phillips-head screws holding the plate on that covers the roller brush; pull out the brush, and cut off/clean off all the hair and string. Replace everything and try running the vacuum. Alternate solution: perhaps the belt that makes the brush go around is broken. If so, follow the above steps to remove the roller brush, then replace the belt.
