I want to fix it preferably. Surely if I dropped it it can only be a case that something has come loose or disconnected?

I have managed in last half hour to get keyboard out, and made sure all the connections of things I could see were connected. Still then same. The processing light is still perm on, and after logging on nowt else happens........

It sounds like you may have damaged the hard drive. Can you get the thing to come up to the point that you can run any diagnostics?

Slow, stalls, freezes up

If your hard drive is too full, then your computer is going to perform slower. Delete old files which are not required.

Remove programs that you are no longer using. Delete temporary files.

Empty your recycle bin. Right click on Recycle Bin. Click Empty Recycle Bin>Yes.

Run an error check on your computer. The error check can remove errors that slow down your computer. If you are using Windows, you can do this by clicking Start>My Computer. Right click on your hard drive (typically c:) and then select Properties. Click the Tools tab>Check Now and then Start.

Clean up your registry. You can purchase software that will fix any registry errors on your computer.

Perform this computer maintenance on a weekly basis.

I have somehow messup my Dell XPS M140. It starts normally, goes to the desktop, everything but the background disappears and it just stays that way. Anyone have any suggestions? I am just starting out...

Windows explorer is the process that runs the start menu, desktop icons, and many other things. It is likely that this process is being ended for some reason, possibly due to a virus. To restart this process, press ctrl+alt+delete on the keyboard, go into task manager, click new task, type explorer.exe, and click ok. I would recommend doing a full system virus scan after this to eliminate the problem in the future. Good luck!
