Question about Arris SURFboard SB5120 Modem

Dropping connection I also had no problems until my cable company was bought out. Then my system started to drop signal. Literally every 5 - 10 minutes. I have to unplug the modem for 30 sec. to reestablish connection or restart the computer. I have had the cable company check the hard line and they say signal is good. The modem is a sb5120 Surfboard. The system is a dual Pentium 4 and the hook up is usb and acting as network host. Here is my connection info Downstream Value Frequency 597000000 Hz Signal to Noise Ratio 36 dB QAM QAM256 Network Access Control Object ON Power Level -2 dBmV The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. The modem randomly drops the connection and restarts on it's own. Usually does this when there is a download or upload taking place while I am online or even when I am playing Xbox online. Why is this...

There can be any of a number of reasons for the modem randomly dropping your connection, but the vast majority of these are going to deal with a poor signal coming in over the coaxial cable line. Call your cable provider and let them know the modem is resetting. If they claim there are no problems, ask them for the signal strength and the "SNR". The signal strength should generally be within a ballpark of -10dbmv to 10dbmv, the closer to 0 the better. The SNR should not be any lower than around 32 or 33db.

Would like to connect a fax but only port 1 or (tel 1) port 2 does not work, should i send back to comcast or reset modem

There is nothing wrong with your modem. Comcast charges extra for a second line. Depending on your model of fax machine, there should be both an input ond an output on the back of the fax machine. Plug the fax machine into line 1 on the modem. Then, plug your phone into the input on the back of the fax machine. If you fax does not have both in and out, then you can purchase a "Y" phone line adapter from your local electronics store.

ps. VoIP is a digital line... Facsimiles are analog signals... Sending analog signals over digital lines is not recomended. If you are wondering "why?" (and understand tech jargon) VoIP is sent via UDP, which is a connectionless protocol (does not retransmit dropped packets) Fax machines use TCP, which does resend dropped packets. This variance in Qualiy of Service sometimes cases strange activity such as both lines (sending and receiving) dropping connections, faxes taking a long time to transmit (due to constant resending loops), etc. It does work... kind of. I would just not assume that faxes made it to their destination until it gets confirmed.

S85100 Surfboard modem it seems to be slow getting a lot of timeouts and dropping of internet servers Safari, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox

The will be dependant on your signal levels to the modem

login into your modem

Check signal
RX should be between -5 - +5
TX should be 40-48
SNR should not be below 32%

Typically too many splitters or too much signal can be the problem

Internet device problem (maybe)

no this is not normal if you keep dropping off then theres a problem with either the modem or the reception you are getting, if your using a wireless modem try to look for a good spot where you can reviece a good connection if you are not using a wireless modem, if you have a spare modem try using it if still get the same result then its time contact your i.s.p (internet service provider)

I have a Zoom X6 ADSL modem that keeps dropping my internet signal. How can I correct this?

is it wireless connection or ethernet? Zoom routers have a firewall and when you have something connected that the firewall doesnt like (Xbox 360 or Gaming) it will drop the connection. goto and it will give you instruction on how to by-pass the firewall using an different IP address.

Modem crashes, and won't work again until I power cycle

you may want your cable company to come out and check the forward signal to the modem wich could be to low , or the return to the modem  could be to low/high . one last thing is ,it could be having packet loss so severe that it drops your connection even though the modem stays linked up.

Wireless broadband connection dropping all the time

There are a number of things that can cause this. The most common as as follows.
1) Either your computer or wireless modem is being effected by mains interference. Make sure that all power cables are clear of your modem and computer, except those essential to run the units.

2) Your computer is picking up another local wireless modem signal on the same channel. Try changing channels.

3) Your modem drivers need updating. Visit the manufacturer's website and download the latest driver.

4) Your computer is too far away from your wireless modem.

There are numerous other reasons, but it is worth trying the obvious first. The most common of all is mains or power cable interference.

Toshiba PCX2500 Cable Modem Problem

Your cable signal is probably to weak at the modem. This is the most common cause, especially if it works and then doesn't, works for a while then doesn't.

Call your cable company and have them come out to check signal strength at the modem.

You could have a damaged drop to the house, water damage on the line, squirrel chew (seriously), dry rotted drop, too many splitters in the house, etc...

Losing connection

I assume this is a cable modem? You need to call your cable company and have a trouble ticket created. I worked for the cable company installing cable for quite a while and I bet my paycheck the signal getting to the modem are below specs and that's why the modem gets dropping the internet connection.

Hope this helps.
