Have you tried it in auto shooting mode and made sure the flash was on auto? Try going into a room with low light (like a bathroom) and take a shot with the flash on auto and if it still doesn't go off, call Canon and set up for service under your one year manufacturer's warranty.

Hope this helps!

Please check the memory card with your PC and check if there are any corrupt files within. If so remvoe and format the card , Also so a virus scan and confirm that the Sd card is clean.
Now insert and check. If however the card is found in good condition in the first place then there are errors in the interface to the processor in the camera which might need a technical help from the Canon-service center.

My camera is less than 6 months old and the flash will occassionally work and not work, why is this?

The fault is definetly in the flash unit and unfortunately it is within the camera itself. Opening the camerra to identify the fault is the difficult problem. It is for sure an intermittent fault in the trigger to the flash or an electronics failure in the flash unit. What you can try is to set the flash to themanual mode and choose flash when required rather than the auto mode. If this works in consistance then it is the fault in the switchover. Otherwise you may need help to look inside the camera for the flash circuit. Hope I could help/.Good day

Flash not functionning after lens exchange

Did you replace the lens yourself? If so, no firmware update is going to solve your problem. Besides, there are no firmware updates for your camera.

Is there a fill in flash setting for the canon 870is?

Press the button with the lightning bolt icon until the lightning bolt appears by itself on the screen. It will now flash on every shot.

I've got two good sized black spots on my LCD screen. They don't show up in the photos, but are a nusance.

It sounds like this is a common problem with this model. The lcd screen on my SD870 IS developed a large area of dead pixels a few months after I bought it new. A family member with the same camera had the exact same problem.

White display screen

Sounds like the Backlight is working but the LCD is not. The first thing I would try is opening up the camera(if this is the sort of thing you are comfortable doing) and pulling out and then pushing in the LCD ribbon.

See this image for where the ribbon for the lcd connects (at least on a SD600).

Focusing Still Photos with SD870 IS

If you check page 45 in the manual, you'll see that the orange light during the half press indicates that the flash is turned on. A single beep means that the camera is having difficulty getting a "focus lock" (usually when shooting in low light conditions). See page 100 of the manual for suggestions on how to improve the chances for getting a well-focused picture.
