Question about Computers & Internet

DELL Studio 1737, last week my computer shut down and now all I have is a message that states the following....SMART Failure Predicted on hard disk 0: WDC WD3200BEVT-75ZCT2-(S1)......WARNING: Immediately backup your data and replace your hard disk drive, a failure may be imminent, Press F1 to continue. Wife's laptop and no, she did not backup her hard disk before this error code presented itself. What do I do????

I hit F1, but it does not allow for the boot-up to continue. It actually goes to a startup repair window. There it goes through a quick diagnostic and a MS Window comes up indicating that startup repair cannot repair what ails the computer automatically. It then gives two options: 1) send info about this problem and 2) don't send. I do option 1 (recommended) and a message comes up to contact system administrator to determine repair or replacement of drive.

If you have overclocked the computer then put everything back to standard, that can do it. Try reinstalling windows, and when asked repair the windows already installed. That will reverse any windows data corruption. Remove and reconnect the hard drive data cable, a loose connection can cause a SMART alarm. Download seatools and run the long test, it is a better way of checking if the alarm is correct. Switch the computer off for an hour, sometimes the SMART test just goofs off for no reason. Only then do you **** your underwear and buy a new hard drive.

It sounds like the failure message is saying your hard drive is about to lose sector 0. But if you press F1 it will let you continue your boot and then you can backup your computer.

You can just do the system backup to a set of DVD's as instructed by the dell restore disk creator program. I have done this for my mothers home pc and works pretty well. Then when the HD does finally fail you can replace it and reload your system with the newly made restore disks.

So. The drive already gave up the ghost eh? You might want to contact DELL and find out if they have a cheap/free restore disk you can order. At least you can get your laptop running again with minimal grief. You will need to buy a new hard drive and then use the restore disk to reload the OS. The bad news is your old drive may not be readable anymore. I hope you have all your program software handy too.

But. You can also go try contacting a local computer repair shop and see if they could image the old drive onto a new one for you. That would probably cost almost twice what just a new drive will cost but it would put you right back where your were before this happened.

I guess it comes down to how bad you want the contents of that laptops HD back and how much you want to spend. But, then again, aint it always?!

Good luck and keep me posted.

SMART is used to measure your HDD health. It warns you of impending failure of your hard drive. If it goes down, it's a good idea to backup important stuff and prepare to replace the HDD.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology systems (SMART) and it's usually built in to most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks.

I have a problem with my dell studio laptop stating like smart hard disk failure in statrup and asks to hit F1 to continue..please give a solution for this problem...

Normally the SMART error occurs when the hard drive has gone bad.. What you do is.. Try running the dell diagnostics by turning on the computer holding the FN key.. It will run some tests... If it provides any error code then the Hard drive has gone bad you need to replace it.. Call up the Dell or a local tech and replace the hard drive

Acer Aspire 5100: SMART Failure on Hard Disk 4

Hello there,

As per experience, SMART Utility will check your HDD for any errors that may occur.

I backed up everything and replaced a new HDD and got rid of the error.

Opened up the problematic HDD and noticed a very light scratch on its "platters".

As for me. Never ignore this warning before something might happen to your HDD and lost important data.

SMART is the system that monitors the health of a hard disk, in your case  it's close to complete failure. Follow immediately what that warning message says - copy all your data to some DVD's, replace the hd and reinstall.

Smart failure predicted on hard disk 4

Yes usually that error means that the hard drive is telling the controller card that there are some problems with the drive.

Although the drive may still work, it is highly recommended to replace it with a new drive.

I would replace the drive but keep the old drive just in case, after re-installing Vista you find that there is additional data you did not backup or remember to backup.

Just replace the drive, and if it's a Dell laptop, use the Dell Vista reinstallation DVD, and it will not ask for a keycode to reinstall.

May also want to go to another computer and go to support.dell.com and click Drivers and Downloads. Type the service tag and go ahead and download all drivers needed (i.e. network card, sound card, etc.) so after you reinstall Vista, if there are any drivers missing you will be ready to install them.

Hope this helps.

SmaT FAILURE PREDICTED ON HARD DISC

okay you have seen that message simply because it did not detected any hard-disk. If you know how to open your computer all you have to do is press all the wires in there it maybe dew to loose connection. then try booting it up again be sure it has a system already. If still didn't work out no other solution but to replace the hard disk.

Replace hard drive

You didn't ask any question ....but you already know the answer. The drive is most likely now a paperweight.

If you have critical data to recover, you can contact Drive Savers ...they're pricey, but they're good!

Hope this helps - remember to rate! :)
