Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

Two sheets wedged up tightly in the first feed rollers from bottom tray. Had my nose in every available orifice of the cursed thing and still can't clear it. I beg at your knees. Steve

Hi,

To remove paper jam from your Brother printer, follow the steps given below.

  • Open the front cover
  • Slowly take out the drum unit and the toner cartridge assembly
  • Open the back cover (as shown below)
shreysri_13.gif
  • Pull the Tab on the bottom right towards you
  • Pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. If the jammed paper cannot be pulled out eaisly, push the tab with one hand while you gently pull the paper out with the other hand
  • Close the back and front cover
  • Print a test page
Happy Printing :)

Regards,
Shrey

Printer quit printing. Screen says fuser cover is open. Where is it located so I can close it?

Your problem: paper is jammed in the back of the printer around/in the fuser.

The Users Manual for your printer is located at:
http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users Manual/UM_DCP_7030_7040_EN_1510.PDF

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader (free from www.adobe.com) to view it.
LOCATION:The fuser cover is located in the back - its covered by the panel in the back called
the "back cover" aka "back output tray cover".
2-step fix:
(A) open the back cover - on the back of the printer.
HOW: it flips down
(B) open the fuser cover and remove paper jam
How: Pull the 2 tabs (one left and one right) toward you to open the fuser cover.
(it also flips down to open).
Most of this fix comes from downloading the Users Manual and blowing up page 60 (of 108 pages).

Printer stopped. said my fuser cover is open. Where is it?

The fuser is located at the rear of the printer. Open the rear door and make sure it closes flush all around. If this does not clear the message, you may have a broken actuator fin on the door that cannot close the microswitch which makes it think the door is still open.

My Brother DCP 7040 printer can only print 1 copy... even if input request to print multiple copies of something

I've had the same problem with my Brother MFC-9440CN and XP Pro.
Try changing Printer properties (Control Panel\Printers) and click Advanced\Printer Processor button. Here you can try to change Printer processor: WinPrint, ModiPrint, hpzpplhn, LMPRTPRC.

I solved my problem choosing hpzpplhn (RAW).You can also try to deactivate 'Enable advanced printing features' in the printer, advanced, properties...

OPEN THE FRONT COVER THEN CLEAN THE CORONA WIRE OF DRUM UNIT ACCORDING TO THE LABEL. PlEASE HELP

This will solve most "Toner End Life" message problems when you know that there is toner still in the cartridge.
1. Remove the toner assembly by opening the top scanner lid, then pull(tilt) open the front panel, and pull out the toner assembly by gently grabbing the tabs and pull out with an upward motion. The toner cartridge(grey color) and the toner holder assembly (black color) will come out.
2. At the top rear of the assembly you will find a square green tab that can be slide along lengthwise of the toner. Just slide it back and forth fully several (5 to 10 times) times. I carefully blow on it as well(no spitting!) while sliding it.
3. Put the assembly back into the printer, Close the front cover, and drop the scanner cover.
4. Whala ! (usually), actually this has worked everytime for my brother and myself.

How to check the toner level of Brother printer

It has no accurate measure of the toner left, it is reset when you put in a fresh toner and just counts prints. The Brother shines a light thru a little window from right to left and when the toner is empty the light shines thru and it says it's empty.

How reset drum page counter brother dcp-7040

This works for my DCP-7020, so it may work on the 7040.

If your drum is still good - take it out and put it back in - the trick is to LEAVE THE FRONT DOOR OPEN after you put it back in. With the door still OPEN push the "options" button and you will be prompted for "New Drum?" and then push the "Up" button for 'Yes' and "Accepted" will appear on the lcd screen - and then the drum counter will be reset.
