For sharpest picture, you need to set you PC video resolution to the monitor native resolution for thsi monitor which is 1280 x 1024 @60Hz.
Resolution adjustment:
From Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/display_change_screen_resolution.mspx?mfr=true

and here:

and here:

Unless there is problem in the monitor or in the video card if the native resolution is correct but still not sharp.

My monitor is fuzzy in internet

Fuzzy on the internet and everything else or fuzzy just on the internet? check for monitor resolution and see if you have the screen resolution set right. If you have the resolution set too low, the screen can appear more fuzzy if the aspect ratio is not set right.

try to reset the device into factory defaults, you should be able to perform that from the menu. then set the native resolution and perform the auto adjustment.

I have a 17" Gem

Hello,
You shouldn't need to install software for a monitor to work. What you may have to do though, is configure your display settings to allow an external display. Your laptop might have a function key to do this. Try clicking the function key + the key that looks like a monitor display on your laptops keyboard. This should activate the external display port. You might also try going into the control panel, select display and enable the secondary display. Also a 17 inch display probably has a screen resolution of 1024x768 or 1280x1024 so make sure you don't set the resolution any higher then that or the display might not show anything.

Can't read anything; content strains my eyes--too small

Have you tried changing the screen resolution? Many PCs come set to a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher. That can usually be changed with the Control Panel or by right-clicking on a blank area of the desktop, choose Properties, click on the settings tab, and then adjust resolution. Don't set it too low or it will be hard to read a whole page of a document....experiment and see what works best for you.

The picture on the screen as all fuzzy and cant get a clear picture without having a shadow or it being fuzzy

Do you have a led or crt display? It could be just your display settings. Go to control panel /display properties /setting tab / and try changing the screen resolution. If no difference try the color quality. You can change the color bits without hurting any thing. Just remember what you changed it from and to.
If this doesn't help maybe you'll need a new screen.
