Question about RCA P52926 52" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Top third of picture is distorted, kind of wavy or out of proportion while the bottom two thirds appears to be fine. Also when you first turn the set on the picture is only about one third of its height in the middle of the screen. As it is on the picture gets taller but when it gets to full height you see a horisontal line above is wavy below is fine. What is the cause?

Sounds like a problem with the horizontal/vertical deflection circuit. Can you please upload an image to an imagehosting site like imageshack.us and get me the direct link?

It is definitely a problem with the HOT and/or deflection circuit. It is recommended that you replace both the deflection IC and HOT . Then look for anything that may have caused the overload that blew the ICs in the first place ex: Faulty resistors, blown caps. This is gonna require considerable amount of electronics and soldering skills and I would recommend that you seek the assistance of a qualified tech if you do not have these.

Wavy picture on top and bottom

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.

Press the RATIO button repeatedly to select the desired picture format. You can also adjust Aspect Ratio in the OPTION menu.
  1. Set By Program. Selects the proper picture proportion to match the source’s image. (4:3 → 4:3, 16:9 → 16:9)
  2. 4:3. Choose 4:3 when you want to view a picture with an original 4:3 aspect ratio, with gray bars appearing at both the left and right sides.
  3. 16:9. Choose 16:9 when you want to adjust the picture horizontally, in a linear proportion to fill the entire screen.
  4. Horizon. Choose Horizon when you want to adjust the picture in a non-linear proportion, that is, more enlarged at both sides, to create a panorama view.
  5. Zoom 1. Choose Zoom 1 when you want to view the picture without any alteration. However, the top and bottom portions of the picture will be cropped.
  6. Zoom 2. Choose Zoom 2 when you want the picture to be altered, both horizontally extended and vertically cropped. The picture taking a halfway trade off between alteration and screen coverage.
  7. Cinema Zoom. Choose Cinema Zoom when you want to enlarge the picture in correct proportion. Note: When enlarging or reducing the picture, the image may become distorted. You can adjust the enlarge proportion of Cinema Zoom using D / E button. The adjustment range is 1~16.

By distortion do you mean that the top part is stretched? If so, you have bad caps in the vertical circuit. If you are comfortable working inside hte set and can solder, you can fix this yourself. Please post the model number and I can give you the details.

MODEL NO SP42W4HB PICTURE DISTORTED TOP AND RIGHT SIDE COLOURED SHADOWS COLOURED WAVY LINES TOP THIRD SCREEN PINK AND GREEN

This is most likely a convergence problem. You should see 2 large black ICs in side attached to a heatsink. They will be marked STK392-010. Try resoldering the pins on these ICs first. If that does not resolve the problem, replace them. These parts will be about $20 each.
Keep us posted.
