You can access the bios settings at the first boot screen here you have to go to you boot priority and make the dvd Rom drive you number 1 in the list, save and exit bios insert the xp professional disc and re-install window. during this process do not reair you copy of xp home just install the xp professional it will automatically detect and delete the old xp home files without deleting any of your data. But DO NOT formatt otherwise you will lose your data. lease the file system as is. the only catch with this method is that due to the xp home registries being deleted along with it. most of the software which was installed on xp home will be there but not work you will have to re install it.

I dont know how to summarize the problem.

It sounds like the hard drive is bad. You might be able to run chkdsk (or whatevers its called; check disk) to scan/fix errors if possible.

A different issue but:

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

My Western digital divice is mulfunctined as displayed on screen

do you use windows 98? because win 98 cannot support wd 160.
2) the mother board bios may not support this drive, or the interphase of the ext usb drive is faulty. lastly try to remove the raw drive from the casing and use it directly with the pc . i feel it will start working well

320 GIG Hard Drive now thinks it is an 80 GIG hard drive

Enter your BIOS setup and check what the BIOS sees for hard-drive. It may not be assessing the drive size correctly so you may have to force it by manually entering the data it needs to see the drive.

I just purchased a 320 gig hard drive and when i set a partition it only shows 132 gig

Use the WD data life guard disc to partition the drive. Put the disc in, reboot the computer, and run data life guard. A screen comes up and asks if your system can recognize a partition greater than 137 gb. If your system can read larger than 137, then use the option to format one large partition.

Some OS cannot read larger than 137gb. Also some Bios have the same problem.

Western digital passport essential harddrive 250 gig

It assumes that the drive C is the drive you booted from or the "root" drive. You must make it something other than "C". Try putting in a camera card, hooking up an external drive or other device that the computer makes drive "C" THEN hook up your passport. It will be "D" or "G" or something other than "C" and it will work.

Problem maxtor hard drive

What type of Computer are you installing this 80g drive on? How old is it? I need to know some specifics, because in older machines the BIOS are not setup to recognize large capacity HD, in addition you may have recieved a bad Drive. Please advise! I may have an answer for you!
