Since you posted no error codes I am assuming the unit is a millivolt model with a standing pilot. If so, this should help. If not the troubleshooting is a bit different so post your model number from the sticker inside the heater and we can go a different direction if necessary.


By the way...why do you suspect the gas valve? Have you jumped the TH terminals? If so, did the heater fire?


First you will need to get a hold of a digital or analog multimeter and set it for the lowest range of Ohms you can. Your safety circuit is a string of several switches all strung together in a row with the gas valve at the end and the beginning of said string. Any one switch being open or a bad connection anywhere in the circuit and the heater will not fire.

You task is to remove one end of the circuit from the valves TH or TT post and put one end of you meter on that wire and the other end on the TH/PP terminal. It will likely read infinite resistance. Leave one meter lead where it is and remove the other. Follow the circuit from the connected lead up to the first switch. Check continuity from the lead left connected to both sides of the switch. If there is continuity to both sides the switch is fine. Keep moving from switch to switch until you find the bad switch or connection. There may be more than one. When the circuit is working properly and there is nothing within the heater to cause it to shut off you should have 5 ohms or less across the entire circuit. Once you get the reading to that level the heater will work as it should

If you are not familiar with the process I described you would be better served hiring a pool technician to perform this repair as you can cause significant damage to the heater if you do not repair it properly.

Yes, it is either the gas valve or the gas supply that is the problem. Can you check the gas pressure with a manometer? How old is the heater? Gas valves go about 10-15 years on average.

Hayward spa pool heater pilot on, heat does not ignite burners


Don't really think the gas company would be checking your pool heater, they most likely just checked their gas connections. I would suspect a few things; control module, thermostat, gas valve, pressure switch. You say you get pilot light, and as long as it doesn't turn off and on, as if it is not being sensed, then I would suggest the control module is fine. If the pilot and main burner is controlled by the same valve, and your pilot light stays lit, then I would suggest the thermostat is fine. I take back the pressure switch since the pilot will ignite. I would check power to the gas valve solenoid and see if the control module is trying to open the gas valve. I would suspect low voltage, probably around 24v. If voltage is present and no gas, I would say you found the problem.

Bradford-white water heater wont heat water.the blower motor hums but wont blow.also,pilot light wont light,is this just a safety feature?


Water heater is not identified and gas valve is not known.
Review options below:

1) Add a comment and describe what gas control valve is on the water heater, and model number from label on side of unit. Include what you have tried so far.

2) Try unplugging water heater and see if water heater resets.
Disconnect blower from gas valve, then plug blower in to see it it operates.
This will eliminate or include blower as suspect.

Hydrapower 10h -pilot lights but gas wont light only lights when I tap the pilot tube. Then works for a while and reverts to not lighting the gas again


First suspect is air in gas line or dirty combustion parts.
Typical gas water heaters today suggest cleaning burner parts yearly, including bleeding air out of gas line.

I have a Williams Gas Space Heater Model#3501912. I purchased this furnace about 10 yrs ago. I have noticed that the space heater will not shut itself off. The gas burners are on, but will not shut itself...


I would suspect not. It's very, very rare for a control valve to go bad, unless someone tried to force it to urn with a pair of pliers or something similar.

If you have provided annual service to the heater, it's probably just residual gas remaining in the burners. To test this theory, turn the flames down to low and then turn the burner OFF. Do the burners and the pilot light go out? If it doesn't, you'll be that rare consumer that needs the Control Valve replaced.

It sounds like a delayed ignition- and YES!-- that could be dangerous if something flammable was nearby, and no one was around to make sure the fire did not start something int he room on fire!

Trouble shooting delayed ignition:

Does this heater use a glowing ignitor to ight?

Or a standing pilot?

Or a spark?

I suspect that whatever is supposed to light the gas burner, is not in the path of the first gas release, (when the gas valve Opens) and so it takes a bit for the gas to build up, and finally get around to the source of ignition-- and then WHOOSH!!-- all that extra gas ignites!

Can you see the ignitor as it goes thru its first firing cycle-- what do you notice about the ignitor?

Something to consider:

What prevents it from filing the room with gas, before it ignites!

Sounds mighty dangerous to me!

Your on right track. When this happens and small flame still there, pull wire(s) off at gas valve, or test for voltage from ECO to gas valve. No voltage, then there should be no gas. Change gas valve.

Pilot will light but main burner will not light


if burner lights after jumping valve you have something wrong in thermostat loop. disconnect the 2 thermostat wires on gas valve and use multimeter on continuity setting. if all wires ,connectors and components are good,you will get a tone.since you have jumped out each component in thermostat loop with no success ,i would suspect a bad wire or oxidation on a terminal .

Pool heater won't light


it is possible to light a pool heater with an ignition device,however it is not advisable.since your unit is calling for heat and the gas valve is opening,i suspect you have a faulty ignitor
