Sounds like you've removed the "earth" wire which connects to ground upon releasing the "dead man's handle". I believe this is what stops the engine. Interesting though, that you got it to run by removing this. Could be the coil is breaking down. Could also have given me an idea to test mine that way. I have no spark.

Engine starts up but quit running in one minute or less

Check the coil by removing the upper shroud let the engine run until it shuts down. NO LONGER THAN 5 MINUITES. or you can have heat issues. With gloves on remove one of the spark plugs plug the wire into the spark plug ground the threads to the motor try turnning over the engine. If no spark is seen gap the coil 10 thousanths on both sides. No need to remove the rust on the armature. I find it easier to use two feeler gauges between the magnate and the coil. Retest it if it dies disconnect the yellow wire. If it runs then it's a switch ie: break/clutch blade lever reverse lever and the seat. clean them with break cleaner. If it doesn't run or fire then replace the coil. Hope this helps:

Cant find spark plugs

IF YOU DONT SEE PLUGS WIRES RUNNING DOWN SIDE CYLINDER BLOCK TO SPARK PLUGS.YOUR SPARK PLUGS HAS COILS SETTING ON TOP OF THEM.YOU HAVE A INDIVIDUAL COIL FOR EACH CYLINDER.SOME ENGINES HAS SPARK PLUGS IN VALVE COVERS LIKE CADILAC.SOME ENGINE SPARK PLUGS UNDER ENGINE HEAD COVER WITH COILS ON TOP OF SPARK PLUGS.

Dont start

remove the spark plug and wile holding with a pair of pliers
ground the metal side of the plug against the top of the motor on a bare spot
set the run switch to run and crank the engine look for a spark if theirs a spark
re install the plug.
check the gas line at the carb by removing the
hose and turning on the gas valve under the tank.
if gas flows then replace the hose back.
if theirs no gas then you have a plugged fuel line or gas valve
their is also a screen in the tank attached to the valve remove it and install a in line filter
it will be easier to replace later if it happens again.
remove the air filter and crank engine with the choke closed
check for a gas smell in the carb hole by smell after cranking engine.
if wile checking for a smell of gas at the carb and their was none then you can have a stuck float or
gummed up carb remove and dissemble clean and at that point rebuild the kits are only around $20.00 and a float $6.00+.
if ok remove the spark plug again and set run switch to off
place a finger over the plug hole crank finger should be blow-en from the hole
and a wosh of air if ok. go to next step.
if the pressure did not blow your finger off you may have a stuck valve or a bent one
this will require removing the head for repairs.
take in for service.
if there is no spark with plug removed remove wires from the run switch and connect
together and remove wire from the low oil sensor crank. if spark replace the wire back
on low oil sensor crank if no spark replace the low oil sensor reassemble run.
if the is no spark with the wire on the sensor then replace the run switch.
re assemble run. if their is no spark with oil sensor disconnected and run switch wires
connected to each other remove the front air flow cover to expose the coil check wires for any
bare spots repair as needed. on the top on the flywheel theirs a coil their will be a spade plug
or a wire small that is a kill wire disconnect and crank check spark if spark then that wire is shorted
in the loop and you have to trace it it will go to a wire stud mounted to a plate under
the carb with a plastic mount this can be cracked and shorting bypass and try again still
no spark use a match book cover and lower the coil to the flywheel with the match book cover
in be tween and disconnect the small wire crank if no spark the coil unit is the issue replace
some people will say sand clean the tops of the magnets built in to the flywheel this is a myth
it don't matter but feel free to clean anyways it don't hurt.
this seams allot but it is a complete diagnoses the fuel, spark and air system if all this is ok and still don't run you have a serious internal issue the engine will either need
major work or replacement. i hope this all helps you. re-post your outcome please.

Cant find the spark plugs

Here's a link that will help you. I've included the info that you need to locate the plugs below. Good luck!

http://www.ehow.com/how_4484637_replace-spark-plugs-oldsmobile-alero.html

To gain access to the spark plugs and spark plug wires do the following. In a 2.4 liter engine, remove the ignition coil and module assembly from the top of the engine to gain access. In this Alero model's engine, the spark plugs run down the center of the engine. In a 3.1 liter engine, remove the air cleaner to gain access. The spark plugs are located next to the engine oil reservoir. For a 3.4 liter engine, remove the windshield wiper module cover and rotate the engine for service access. For a 2.2 liter engine, the spark plug wires are located across the top of the engine and require no components to be removed for access to the spark plugs.

I have a Honda HT4213 lawn tractor, it does not have any spark. I checked the seat safety switch. It's good. pto switch, good. Neutral switch seems good. Engine does turn over but as I said no spark.

Flywheel and ignition coil are located on the rear of this engine. Remove covers as needed to reach the ignition coil. There are two (2) High-Tension leads (to the spark plugs) and one (1) small-guage wire.
The smaller guage wire is the engine's "Kill Circuit" trigger-wire. Everything electrical that makes the engine stop running comes back to this wire. Unplug it and check for spark with a spark tester.
SEE NOTE BELOW
If no spark, replace the coil. Part number 30500-ZA0-701.
If good spark, continue your wiring checks, possibly the control relay part number 38350-762-003 located roughly in the left rear of the engine bay.

NOTE: DO NOT START the engine with this kill-wire unplugged! There will be no way to turn it off until it runs out of fuel! Remove the spark plugs and use a spark tester and above all, BE SAFE!

Hope this helps,
Dolf-

Cant find the spark plug location on 2002 4cyl tacoma

Locate the spark plug cover on the engine. On some Toyota Tacoma engines, the cover is across the top of the engine. On others, it is along the side 4 cyl. Remove the cover to reveal the ignition coils and spark plugs wires. The spark plug wires are plugged directly into the engine and the ignition coils are in the tip of the spark plug wire.
Remove the coil and wire from the spark plug. Twist and pull the plug out of the engine. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder well with a socket extender and socket wrench. Turn the wrench to the left to unscrew the spark plug from the engine.

Discard the old spark plug and apply a coat of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plug.

Insert the new spark plug into the socket. Use the socket and extension to screw the spark plug into place.

Return the ignition coils and spark plug wires to the engine and turn it to lock the plug in place. Repeat the entire the process with the remaining spark plugs.

Replace the spark plug cover when all of the spark plugs are replaced.

Good luck and hope this helps and The spark plug tension may range between 11 and 15 foot pounds, depending on the size of the spark plug. The correct tension is indicated on the spark plug's packaging.
