You can try to apply a small amount of grease or oil on it before trying to put it together. Once you have it in position the screws will hold it.

In the factory the gas strut is clamped then installed - you must do the same, the force in it is beyond normal human power.
Take out the strut completely, get a large clamp, secure the heads of the strut in it and compress it. Be very careful when tightening the clamp, the force in there can easily hurt someone.
