Question about Coleman Powermate Powermate 5000W Generator

1 Answer

My generator will not start. If I prime it, then it will run as long as the fuel I put in last. A few seconds. I changed the oil and have new gas.

This is probably the needle inside of the carburetor stuck in the seat.
Sometimes you can just tap the side of the carburetor with a hard plastic mallet of the plastic end of a screwdriver handle.

If this does not work then you will need to remove and tear down the carburetor and replace the needle and seat with a new needle and seat.

This should take care of the problem.

DuroMax XP10000EH Dual Fuel Generator runs well on gasoline, but will only start and run for about 2-3 seconds after priming regulator on LP gas. Changed regulator (new OEM) but same issue remains.

I am sorry to hear you cannot get your Generator started, First I think you should start by looking at the ignition system.
To find the fault please follow these steps:
  1. Removed the spark plug from the engine and re-attach to the Ignition HT Lead. Hold the end of the spark plug tip to a metal section of the engine, and turn over the engine. If all is working correctly, you should see a strong spark, and the engine should run smoothly.
  2. If you do not get a spark, you next need to check oil level is at correctly level (to the very top as if about to flow out) and repeat step 1.
  3. If you still have no spark or it stops running within a few minutes of starting, disconnect the oil sensor wire (you will find it on the front coming from your engine just to the top left of the oil filler cap) and try step 1 again.
  4. Still not getting a spark? Then you need to replace your ignition coil. You can order one from us from our website on this page:
If you are getting a spark, but still having trouble starting the Generator, there is most likely a fuel problem too. We can assist you with the next set of fault-finding tests if you need some help. Let us know how it goes.

Okay I have a pull start generator I've used it for about 4 to 6 hours a day for the last 2 week now all the sudden it won't start it ran outta gas and I put more gas in it put oil in it and it wont start...

Hi Tina:
Here are a couple of ideas.
- When you put oil in it, was it really low on oil, and, how much did you add? Make sure that the oil level is where it's supposed to be on the dipstick. Too much oil is not good.
- When you run out of gas, sometimes you need to prime the engine to get it to start (after you've filled the gas tank). Do you know that gas is getting into the carbueretor?
- Do you know that you have spark? Pull the plug(s) and make sure they are in good condition and not wet with gas).
- Do you know that the fuel you got was clean?
Hope these ideas help.

Snow blower 1 year old, was using it ran out of gas , put in new gas, went to start, it ran for few seconds then dies,, prime it it runs few seconds dies, has NEW gas ans new plug, only runs for seconds...

If it has a fuel filter on it change it and that should get you going again. If not the dirt that was in the tank is prob in the carb cleaning the fuel bowl and jets should get you up to par. Hope that helps

Honda eb3800x will not start. I started and ran it in June 2010 with no problem. Will not start today 9/2/2010. Checked oil, checked spark plug, drained all gas and put new gas. Carb getting fuel....

the worst thing for generator and compressors are to sit up. when you do sit them up put stabil in the gas. run it and then run the gas out of the carburator. now, make sure the gas in the tank is good and has no water or trash. check the fuel line that it is in good conditon and not plugged. pull the carberator and clean varnish out and clean jets. soak it over nite in varsol or parts cleaner. check to see if you have a low oil shut off. oil level must be correct. check your exhaust to make sure it isn't plugged. some have a little screen that get coated with carbon and won't let it exhaust.( fuel in, spark, exhaust out)

Generator shuts of few seconds after start like there is no fuel

Has it been stored for a while with fuel in it? It's possible that the carb is dirty. If you store an engine for a long period of time and leave fuel in it, be sure to put a fuel stablizier in it. It's preferable to leave no fuel in it. Fuel has ethanol, and ethanol attracts water which causes corrosion. Ethanol can also causes certain gaskets and hoses in a fuel system to deteriorate and the residue can block up your carb. If your generator is only running for a few second, it's probably running off the prime and then starving for fuel. Just a guess, but it's the best possibility I can think of. You can try spraying carb cleaner in the intake and see if it helps and to see if you are on the right track. Good luck!

Mower will not stay running

Sounds like a lack of fuel. If it has a briggs motor replace fuel pump diaphram in carb.
