Question about Maxtor Hard Drive

1 Answer

While working, WinXP suddenly shows a "New hardware detected" message in the tray, showing a Maxtor hard drive with a very strange serial (alpha numeric code with lots of special chars such as " % $ etc). This is an IDE drive I use as data storage only, running my system in other SATA drive. I then go to check out the drive (E:) and find it working but, while opening a few jpg files as verification, the system said it could not find the file locations i was trying to access. Went back to MyPC and could no longer see E: drive but I could find a just-installed drive (no drive access character assigned) in the Hard Drive Manager. Is there a way to put this drive back to work without losing the data? What could have happened? Thanks.

Maxtor hard drive. macbook pro does not show hard drive icon on desktop . Just started this problem today. didn't drop it or anything. It lights up when it comes on, makes all the usual sounds.

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Maxtor 3100 200gb hard drive not detected on PC running xp

Here we have two things to check and understand.

1) Is the Bios Detecting this hardware. Or is it that the basic Motherboard itself is not accepting the HDD.

2) The version of OS you are running and if the pug and play is able to detect the Hardware as the second stage of detection.

Do you see any hardware detection notification when you connect the HDD or when you Start running the HDD ?

I would like you to check these which will give you a clear picture of the issue.

Else please write back.. The Hardware on which the HDD is connected. Motherboard Specs, and also the messages or notifcations that you might be getting while trying to connect the Hard Disk. Good Luck.

Maxtor 320 GB mini not working

If it shows up as a USB mass storage device it:-
1. Has power
2. It is connected to the computer via USB.
3.The correct software has been loaded for the hard drive.
The beep sound is probably an error message saying that the drive is not responding properly inside the case.

Hard drives Drives have been known to stick or not start up due to power cables or ribbon cables being dislodged. Try pushing these back into place.

If this is not the problem go to the Maxtor site (maxtor.com) and report the problem with the drive, not the USB which appears to functioning correctly.

Been working fine in winxp pro for 2 years - suddenly fails to show & in Device Manager Other shows TUSB6250 Boot Device but can't find driver

Is there any recent changes on the computer?

have you tried to disconnect and reconnect its cable?

Sometimes we just need to reseat the cable for the HDD to be detected.

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it is not detected, then either the disk-drive "inside" the unit is dead, or the "adapter" (USB-to-Disk-Drive) inside the unit is dead.

If the latter, disassemble the case, remove the disk-drive, and attach it as an "internal" hard-drive to your computer.

See message please.

Hi,

If your PC is not acknowledging the device nor allowing you to install a driver the most likely cause is a failed circuit board in the enclosure with the next most likely be a failed hard drive inside the enclosure.

Take the drive to a local computer store and swap the hard drive into a new enclosure. If this works your done, if not the drive is likely damaged and you will need the help of a data recovery pro.

Either way comment back here and if needed I will point you to an appropriate pro.

External Hardisk Maxtor 4 One Touch not detected

Have you tried different USB cables with the drive? If the drive is self powered (no ext power supply) which I think that one is, then it needs a really good cable to draw the 5 volts from the USB port. If you have tried a known working cable, then it could be the USB controller or the disk itself. You can buy the USB box on eBay really cheap and move the drive over.

Maxtor 80gb hard disk not dtecting

You might want to try downloading this fix from Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/KB/908673, as your first line of attack.  The problem seems to be within your usb 2.0 hub on your computer.  See if this helps.
Thanks for posting.
