Go to the bios and check if your hard drive is detected, if not, try removing your hard drive from the laptop and purring back in again and check the bios again.

I HAVE A LAPTOP THAT STARTS BUT IT TELLS ME TO INSTALL AN OPERATING SYSTEM ON THE HARD DISK.

Sounds like a new blank Hard Drive, erased Hard drive or a faulty hard drive. If hard drives not faulty need to restore the original drives contents from a back up made previously on an external drive or DVD's. If you do not have the back up, then you need to load the original OS using an original restore CD / DVD's and then load all the correct and required drivers from the HP.com Site for that model PC and the OS (XP. VISTA. WIN 7 etc) you are using.

Laptop is beeping when turned on and will not load windows

Remove the hard drive and power up the computer, does it still beep, if yes sub out the ram memory one at a time and test. If no reseat the hardware back in position to see if you can start it, no change have the hard drive tested.

Could not proceed to boot

To check your hard disk drive if its detected, turn on your computer and press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS setup. Then go to standard cmos setup and there should be the hard drive detected as Primary or Secondary IDE or SATA. If detected and not loading into windows that case your operating system is corrupted. However If your hard drive is not detected on your bios, turn off your computer and unplug and plug your hard disk drive then turn on your computer start pressing again DEL or F2 then check again your hard drive if it is detected.

If your hard disk drive and cd/dvd rom drive are the same cable you can switch the cable to check if the cable of the hard drive are ok. After you have checked and you found out that the two cables are ok that means you will have to format your computer. But you must backup all your data and files before doing so. Formatting your computer will erase or delete the entire space of the partition which you perform formatting.

Here is the video tutorial on how to format your computer using windows xp

WILL NOT PICK UP HARD DRIVE OR DVD

Hi,

Look through your bios for a setting called QuickPost/QuickBoot/QuietPost....

Disable this feature then save and exit the bios, when you restart you should see the long version of the bootup screen, generally if it is turned on the laptop will not see or accept hardware changes until you disable the option.

If it finds your drives you can turn the feature back on for quicker booting on the next bootup. If it still doesn't see your drives I would suspect a fault on the motherboard.

Let us know if this works, if not we'll try a few other suggestions.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Cannot load operationing system because of fault saying, "no hard disk found in this computer"

Check the data cable. Make sure it is fully connected. (Sometimes they come loose). Check all connected data cable's & power cables within the system. Start with the new drive you installed. Unplug the data cable & re-connect. Follow it to the motherboard & do the same. If no cable seemed loose than replace the hard disk drive's cable with a new cable. Standard 80-conductor Ultra DMA IDE/ATA interface cable. See below;

ab2779a.jpg When you start up the dimension 4600, enter the bios, watch your screen at start up. You will need to press F2 or F10 key to enter the bios.
Once in the bios check that you hard disk drive is shown.
Most bios will list the drive by its model number. If you see the model number of the drive chances are you can save & exit the bios. Button up the case. You should be able to load windows.

Luck!

Won't turn on

If Windows is loaded, unplug the power cord and the USB (or Firewire cable). Turn the power on it. Plug the USB cable back in.

Make sure your drive isn't connected to a USB hub. There are connection problems with those.
