I think you have a four wheeler but what year ? I was a Yamaha dealer/mechanic. Many cars have hydralic adjusters that never need adjusting. Others (my old 1981 Volva had shims) have small screws with lock nuts hiding under a cover. Whether you have one cylinder or many cylinders you have to have the cam shaft in the correct position to adjust that particuler valve. Often the cam shaft is driven by a cam chain which might have an automatic adjuster or might have to be manually adjusted. A push-rod valve engine usually needs more clearance than an overhead cam shaft with short rockers. Once a year is often enough to adjust valves unless you use the machine every day. Valve almost always get tighter as they are used. When they are too tight they leak and the exhaust which is hot can burn then you loose power. If valves happen to be loose then the cam shaft hammers them and can damage the ends ( also you hear a lot of noise). Some engines are noisey anyway so you have to have experiance to know what is what. It you run low on oil the cam or rockers can wear out and you have to replace them. Rockers and cams have a special thin hard facing and this can not really be repaired so you have to replace all the parts.
