Firstly, there appears to be many causes of the black screen issue. The symptoms are very distinctive and troublesome. After starting your Windows 7, Vista, XP, NT, W2K, W2K3 or W2K8 PC or server the system appears normal. However, after logging on there is no desktop, task bar, system tray or side bar. Instead you are left with a totally black screen and a single My Computer Explorer window. Even this window might be minimized making it hard to see.
If you have these symptoms you can safely try our free Black Screen Fix. It will fix the most common cause we have seen of this issue. Running the fix program is easy under normal circumstances, simply download with your browser using the link above and run the program. However, if you are trying to do this from the PC which has the black screen it is a bit more tricky. In these circumstances follow the procedure below: 1) Restart your PC 2) Logon and wait for the black screen to appear 3) Make sure your PC should be able to connect to the internet (black screen does not appear to affect this) 4) Press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously 5) When prompted, Click Start Task Manager 6) In Task Manager Click on the Application Tab 7) Next Click New Task 8) Now enter the command: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX" Note this command assumes that you are using internet explorer as your browser, if not substitute your browser path and file details for those of iexplore.exe or use the Browser option of Task manager to locate it. 9) Click OK and your browser should start up and begin the download process 10) When prompted for the download Click run, the black screen fix program will download and run to automatically fix the issue. 11) Now restart your PC and the black screen problem will hopefully be gone.

How to change your Windows 7 display settings

In Windows 7 there are serveral ways to get to your display settings. I have detailed them below in options so that you can access them as needed.

Option 1

Right click on your desktop and select "Screen Resolution"

Option 2

1. Right click on your desktop and select "Personalize"

2. Next click on "Display"

3. Click on "Adjust resolution"

Option 3

1. Click the Start button and click Control Panel

2. Next click on "Display"

3. Click on "Adjust resolution"
Once you are in the Screen Resolution you can set the resolution you want.

Note the resolution that is set now is a wide screen resolution. If you have a standard monitor the equivalent resolution would be 1280 x 1024.

After you have made the needed changes click on Apply then OK to save your changes.

Note if you are still have trouble with your monitor displaying right you may need to install the monitor drives. Windows is not going to have the actual drivers for all monitors. So in picture below you will see where is shows "Generic PnP Monitor" this means that the computer is using a generic driver. You can access this screen by clicking on "Advance Setting".

If you need to install the monitor drivers the link below will take you through the steps of installing the monitor drivers.

I have a Mag Innovision 2200W Monitor. I messed with the settings, and now I get a ''mode not supported'' error. The computer is running in the background, and works with other monitors, but not this one....

Hi

To resolve this issue connect a monitor which is working with the Computer. Now right click on desktop and select properties(if windows XP) or personalize/screen resolution (if windows vista / 7)-> Now click on settings tab (windows XP) or change the resolution of your monitor-> Choose a lower resolution rate maybe 800X600. Now try connecting the other monitor with your Computer and it will work.

If not then check for the refresh rate of your monitor, adjust it to 60 Hz. You can adjust refresh rate from settings tab->advanced button(in XP). Screen resolution/Display settings(under windows 7/vista)->Advanced setting->monitor tab ->refresh rate.

This will surely resolve your issue.

The picture is too big for the screen. the top and bottom is cute off.

You may need to change your resolution. Here are the steps:
  • Windows XP Right Click Desktop and select properties, then click the Settings tab.
  • Windows Vista Right Click Desktop and select Personalize, then on the bottom select Display Settings.
  • Windows 7 right click desktop and select Screen Resolution
Try some different resolutions until your desktop fits in your screen. You could also try moving your screen around with the options built onto your monitor.

Screen monitor images on the righ side is not showig.

Hi afcarrillo,

This could be a simple resolution problem. By that I mean that the resolution is set too low, therefore putting things off screen. Here's how you change the resolution:

Windows XP

Right click the Desktop and select Properties. Click the tab all the way on the right that says settings, and drag the slider to your native resolution of 1600x900

Windows Vista

Click Start, Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, Personalization, Display Settings and drag the slider to 1600x900

Windows 7

Simply right click the desktop, select Screen resolution and pick 1600x900

If you do not have a resolution problem, then it's most likely the monitor itself. Most often times you can fix it one of two ways:

1. Some monitors have a button that says "Auto" which will auto adjust your monitor. If you have one, try it.

2. If that didn't work or you don't have one, go through the monitor's OSD (on screen display) and work through the settings so that you can manually adjust it and set it to your taste.

Hope this helps :)

I connected my laptop to my LCD TV using VGA cable. I changed the mode to VGA external monitor. Image/video appear perfectly fine during start up. but right after windows logged in for like 5 second the...

Easy way:
Press and hold Fn key, and then look at the F1-F10 keys.. Most likely it is F7, and has a picture like a computer screen.
So, press and hold Fn key, and then press F7 (or whatever key it is for your laptop). This will change your "presentation" settings, and thus switch back and forth from laptop screen, laptop screen + external screen (TV), just external screen (TV).
-------------

If this doesn't work as you expect, just try:

Instructions for Windows XP:

Open the Display Properties window by:
Start -> Run -> %windir%\system32\control.exe desk.cpl,@0,3
(this is the same window where you can change screen resolution).

There you will see two or more "screens", labeled: 1, 2, 3.

Click on "1", and you'll see:

[X] Use this device as the primary monitor
[X[ Extent Windows desktop onto this monitor

Click on "2", this is your TV.. Mark

[ ]
[X] Extent Windows desktop onto this monitor

Then change the resolution to 800x600.
Click Apply

=> now your TV should start showing you a picture.
You can move your mouse between the laptop screen and the TV screen.

If you want just the TV, you can make "2" to be your primary monitor, by clicking on [X] Use this device as the primary monitor.
