The handwheel may have a pull out/push in action to disengage/engage the clutch, or it may automatically disengage when the bobbin winder is moved to the right for winding........hold a short tail of thread to get it started and you should be away.

Move the winder to the left for sewing, or push handwheel in, according to the mechanism.

How do I get machine case open to take care of thread jam around spindle

Um, you cannot fill a bobbin while it is loaded in the shuttle. To fill the bobbin, you have to remove it from the machine, go through other threading sequences and wind the bobbin on the outside of the machine. If you'd provide us with the make & model of your machine, we could probably help. With the information we've been provided, there's not much we can do.

Bobbin loading

it wont unless there is thread and it has to catch with the top thread. or else you put it where the thread is fed backwards. or, you have to push the lever back over that you filled your bobbin with.

The tension on the bobbin is giving big loops and then breaking

This could be one of the following:
  • wrong bobbin for the machine
  • bobbin loaded the wrong way - must rotate anticlockwise when you pull the thread
  • thread not into the tension spring/device on the bobbin holder correctly
  • bobbin wound badly, uneven tension, loose or uneven across the bobbin
  • poor quality or old dry brittle thread could cause the breaking (but the loops is definitely tension issues).
This is a top loading bobbin machine machine and you can download a manual from
http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html

Here is the threading diagram from the manual.

tally_girl_21.jpg It is important to click the thread down into the tension spring on all top loading bobbin machines and then pull gently on the thread to check that it is under tension, you should feel firm resistance when you pull the thread. If not, then take it out, and try again.

Other thing to look at is how the bobbin is wound. It is necessary to wind a bobbin smoothly and with some tension on the spool as the thread comes off it. Best analogy is the garden hose reel. If you wind it up and don't control where the hose goes onto the reel it will all lump up in the middle, and you won't get all the hose onto it. And then when you go to pull the hose out, it will jam and be difficult to pull. Same with bobbin thread. You want a nice neat even fill across the whole width of the bobbin, not just the middle. To achieve this make sure you use the bobbin winder tension disc when winding. Also use the spool cap on top of the thread spool to stop it from bouncing around as it unwinds - the thread will then wind off around the spool cap and this keeps it running smoothly and not twisting and jerking. If you don't have a spool cap then put the curved handle of a pair of scissors on top of the thread spool to tension it while you wind the bobbin. Also watch the bobbin as it winds, give the thread a nudge with your finger to control the fill onto the bobbin so it winds top, bottom and middle of the bobbin evenly.

I would suggest the following:
clean out the race following the manual directions to remove the bobbin holder, clean in this area, replace it. Wind a fresh bobbin and then load it into the machine, following the manual instructions carefully. Also thread the top of the machine following the manual, put in a new sharp needle from the pack, turn the top tension dial to a medium number (often 5 if dial goes from zero to 10).

Now test sew again. Look at the seam, if you have loops on the bottom of the fabric, underside, then the top thread tension is too loose or not in the top tension discs fully. Generally you should not need to adjust the tension on the bobbin thread for these machines.

I have a Brother 70 stitch computerised sewing machine. I have managed to fill a plastic bobbin with shirring elastic by not using the little tension knob, only the hook section of it on top of the...

You should not have both, bobbin and top thread filled with elastic, it may screw up your timing. And you are talking major expense to fix. Use regular thread in your bobbin.

How do i fill bobbin, thread machine and bobbin?

Did you know all sewing machines are threaded in the same way. The parts just look a little different. If you can thread one machine you can thread them all. Dont you have an instruction book? If not get any instruction book for a simular looking machine. There are many you can dowload for free as a pdf file.

How to thread the bobin on a elna air electronic su. where do i put the loose end when threading the bobin

I assume you mean when you wind a bobbin full of thread??

You take the end of thread from your spool through the tension device or an eyelet on top of the machine, then back to the bobbin on the bobbin winder and thread the loose end through a top hole on the bobbin. Click the bobbin in against the stop and press on the pressure foot to start to wind. Hold the top thread for a bit as the bobbin starts to fill and then once it has been covered by a row or two of thread, stop and cut of the loose end from top of the bobbin. Now continue to wind the bobbin until it cuts out as it fills against the stopper. Nudge the thread with a finger tip as it spools onto the bobbin to help get the bobbin filled top and bottom and not just in the middle. (bit like when you coil the garden hose onto the reel, it always wants to go in the middile only and then jams up LOL).

Also a really good idea to place your scissors handle into the top of the thread spool to slow/control it as the thread reels off it. This helps give an even tension on the thread going onto the bobbin which really helps with stitch quality later.

Filling a new bobbin on my machine. It gets very tangled...

I think the bobbin filler is on the top of the machine, on the right. You bobbin goes on the post and then slides to the right to engage.

There should be a round metal guide on the top of the machine. The thread should go from the spool, around this guide, and then to the bobbin.

Your bobbin should have a hole or slot to put the thread through to get it started. You can hold onto the thread for the first second or two and then let go.

The foot pedal that makes the needle go will also make your bobbin spin.

Singer/merritt 2430 bobbin fill

If you lift up the thread holder, the bobbin holder is inside. Loosen the hand guide to stop the needle from going up and down. Pull the thread around the top thread guide and back into the bobbin holder. Thread the bobbin and move the bobbin over so the guage is "inside" the bobbin. As for the manual, the Singer Merritt 2404 is applicable to the 2430 if that helps.

White 2037 Bobbin Filling

turn your thread 3 turns to the right, clockwise,
then pass theend of the thread, under the coming thread and give it another 3 turns to the right.
For better results, always remove old thread from bobbin before filling it up.
