Connect the WD device
Click Start
Right-mouse click My Computer
Click Manage
Click Storage
Click Disk Management (local)
Do you see a "map" of the two partitions on the device?

It's possible that the disk-drive is "dying".
So, make a backup of the files on it, before it's "too late".

Then, if the WD device is still under WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

My external hard disc moder no : TS80GSJ25S shows there is no disc in your drive

If you have used this drive before then the drive is malfunctioning and my need to be formatted. If not, then the disk could need initializing and then formatting. You can check the status of the disk using the windows disk management utility. The directions to use this utility are shown below, If the disk does not appear in the manage disks section, check the connection to the computer, and try to power cycle the drive by unplugging it, waiting for about 20 seconds and then plugging it back in. This may renew the connection and restart the drive.

Disk management utility will help you see all the drives that are connected to your computer, including internal hard drives, CD or DVD Drives, and removable storage like USB sticks and external hard drives. Using this utility, you can check for attached drives that are not visible in windows when attached to your computer. You can also format drives, change drive letters, mark a partition as active and delete partitions. A word on caution about using the Disk Management Utility: This utility can cause destruction of data. If you are not sure of what you are looking at and uncomfortable with using this utility you should consult with an advanced user before making any changes to drives using this utility.

Right click on you "My Computer" Icon

A menu will open

Chose "Manage"

The Computer Management window will open

The Computer Management window is broken down into 3 sections. The first section on the left side of the window shows a menu. Disk Management is on the lower portion of the menu.

The right side is separated into two sections, top and bottom. The top portion shows a list of active drives on the computer. The lower portion shows all drives connected to the computer. CD or DVD drives that have not disk will not show as active drives on the top section, but can be seen in the lower section.

The lower section will show the drive description, drive size and drive condition (online or off line) in small box on the left side of that section. Disk drives will designate a "Drive" and a number. Drive 0 is usually your internal hard drive. Then it would list drive 1, drive 2, etc, depending on how many internal and external drive sources you have connected to your computer. Then it will list your CD drives and generally show their drive letter assignments. Next to the smaller section described above, is a larger section which shows the driver letter, size of the driver and condition (if working correctly will show "healthy")

This is the area you can right click and get a menu that will allow you to open, explore, mark the partition as active, change the driver letter, format the drive or delete a partition. (A note of caution here. Changing the driver letter on your main hard drive partition will cause windows to stop functioning. The main hard drive, or hard drive partition, is normally given the letter "C".) A hard drive may show two or more partitions with separate drive letters designated for each partition.

A drive this is having a problem may show that it needs to be formatted (status as Unformatted). This can be done from this window. An external drive, whether it is a hard drive or CD/DVD drive, can have the letter designator change done if you want to organize your external drives

My external harddisk - WD 320G(my passport essential) can not recoginze on Window 7. Please help to slove.

First check physical connections of hard disk to your cpu. Check in 'device manager' disk drives tab. If its found check in "disk management" in that drive which file system its showing. If it shows raw partition mean your file system is corrupted. It requires remove that partition and create a new partition.

for open device manager : start > run > devmgmt.msc
for disk management : start > run > diskmgmt.msc

You can Reformat the system and REMOVE all partitions. Windows setup will create a new partition from available drive space. If you need to save your data,You can also use a utility like partition Magic and resize the partition. There is a trial version available at no charge. just google "partition magic"

connect your harddisk to computer.
Then right click on my computer icon then click on "Manage"
then click on "Disk Management"

then find your removable device then you find unpartitioned space create new partition .then check.

Also check jumper settings of your harddisk.
It should not be on 16 bit or 32 bit in hardisk.

MY C drive Booting drive is 30GB, in side c drive file properties is showing 20GB bt free space is showing 2GB

Its probably formatted not to use the entire space of the disk, is there another partition or "D" drive where your restore/backup stuff is? That could be take up the rest of the space. Hard disks are always described as being a certain size but can be formatted by windows tlo split up the drive into smaller chunks called partitions. Your C drive/partition might be way less then 30Gb therefore only showing up as 22Gb

My computer didnt recognize my hard disk

Looks like the controller on the Hard disk has malfunctioned. I am afraid, that the Hard disk has to be sent to an expert nearby for Data Recovery. They would have tools which could be used for getting your data intact. But again it all depends on the level of damage to the Hard disk. You may get all / some of your data ot you may get none. Please consult your hardware vendor for this

Unformatted Space

if you have installed the linux in that space then it will not show some times ...
it will also not if it is not partioned correctly ...

you just go to

control panel >(classic view) >administrative tools >computer management >disk management (this is for windows XP)

see if there is any unpartioned space means then just format there by right clicking on it ....

if there is no unpartioned space then check how many drives you have .....
it will show all the partitions over here if you are not able to see some partition in your my computer then may be that partition may be in unsupported format so it is not showing you ... so delete that partition & reformat you will able to use it ...

if you still persist the problem then you can check the harddisk capacity first & then get on to the things ...

that s all your problem will be solved ...

any doubts you can reply me
i am always here to assist you
thank you
