Laptop not recognize wd1200u017 004 usb driv e

I received a gift of a WD1200U017 004 WD Passport May 11th. It works great when plugged into the USB port of my desktop Macintosh G5 computer but is not recognized by my laptop (Mac PowerPC, G4, running Mac OS10.04.11). . .in the past, I have used thumb drives on a regular basis, with no problem.

I have a DELL XPS M1530 / Vista OS. My wd1200U017 used to work with it without a problem. Today I hooked it up and it didn't show in the "My Computer" window. However the light comes on and it says it's working fine. I have tons of important things on it that I can't retrieve now :( It was given to me as a gift in September 2006. I had the same problem with my laptop Dell which was an XP operating system. I had to reconfigue it and lose what I had. I don't wish to do that this time. Please help? My email address is slynasity@yahoo.com

SOURCE: I can't use my external HD

Do you have any kind of security software/firewall installed? It will often block hard drives because it sees them as a security threat. Disable the firewall or security should do the trick.

WD 500 g Passport Power Surge

The power surge error means that your external drive is drawing more power than your USB port can supply. The best solution is buying a powered usb hub (USB hub with external power source) and connecting the device through that.

Alternatively (if you're desperate), you could try testing it in other ports - for instance, if you're using it in a front USB port, try the back ports and vica-versa. If you need something on the drive urgently, and you have the option, you could always try plugging it into another computer and getting the data that way, but of course this is only a temporary fix.

The fact that the drive is in a NTFS/FAT32 format shouldn't make a difference with regards to the main issue, which is power....but like I said, your best solution is unfortunately to buy a powered hub and running the drive through that.

Good Luck,

No instructions on how to use MY PASSPORT 500GB portable hard drive recieved as xmas present.nothing in box exept drive

Congratulation on your Passport.
Use the USB cable that came with it to connect it to the computer.
The computer should recognize it.
Open the file explorer to see the My computer. The drive should appear there, along with the C: drive.
Click on the Passport icon and look for an executable file WD-Synch or something similar. Click the executable and you will set it up.
If you do not want to use the synchronizing and other software that came with it, just use the drive as storage space.

If the drive seems not to be working, and if it came with a power adapter, then it should be plugged in. Usually the USB port of the computer supplies the necessary power, but sometimes that is not enough and certain drives have a power adapter.

Before removing the drive you should use the Safely Remove Hardware program.

Why does my 250 Gig Passport keep showing up and then disappears, then autoplays again and then disappears? It doesn't stay on long enough to transfer to it or from it. I am using Windows Vista on a...

It sounds to me like it keeps unplugging it's self. The cable to the passport may be damaged and have a partially broken wire or the USB plug in either the passport or your computer could be damaged. You might try using it in another system and see what the results are. Check the cable for any kind of damage to the insulation.

When i plug in the jumpdrive on any computer it says USB device not recognized, please help

Well, it’s a super simple solution! No need to edit the registry, uninstall drivers, or anything of that sort.
Simply UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY
Yes that’s it! Note that this does not mean just turning off your computer because modern computers don’t really turn off when you press the power button as the motherboard still gets power.

First to explain, the motherboard is where all of hardware of the computer is connected to, including the USB ports. Sometimes the motherboard needs to be “rebooted” also because something can go wrong, i.e. all your USB ports suddenly stop working. The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices!
So first turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in.
Hope this helps someone fix that pesky “USB device not recognized” Windows error!

P.S. if it is a laptop, power up the laptop with just the batteries, not plugged in to fix this issue.

Give this a try and come back to tell us if it worked or not.

I have a pny 4gb usb 2.0 flash drive black.instructions needed.

Most USB drives are "plug n play" meaning you just plug it in to a USB 2 port and your operating system will recognize it as a drive. If you're using Windows ME/XP/Vista, just plug it into a USB 2 port and once its recognized you'll be able to send files and folders directly to it by right clicking the file or folder and moving your mouse over SEND TO and selecting the drive from the list.

WESTERN DIGITAL 320GB PASSPORT USB PORTABLE

Doh

After posting the above, I found the answer on another forum about 10 minutes later. The WD drive is formated in FAT 32. My XP PC HDDs are formated in NTFS. FAT 32 has a 4Gb file size limit.

Answer. Format the WD drive in NTFS. It takes about 10 sec to do a quick format, but of course you lose all the content. Then You can copy anything you like to it. I have just copied a 33Gb video to the disc.

My laptop does not recognize usb flash drives, while my desktop does. I have an HP Pavilion running windows XP. Are there any drivers to install so these flash drives/mp3 players/camerasmight be...

Some USB flash disks need to draw too much power for use on particular laptops,  as Laptops tend to have USB ports which only have a low current draw,

the only way around this is to buy a "Powered" USB Hub (IE a USB hub with it's own plugtop power supply).

My Portable HDD is exactly the same way, and doesn't work on some laptops for this very reason.
