If the fan is not spinning this can be the issue ...but it can also be the motherboard itself ..if you have the possibility try to change the fan ..cause if it fails to start the computer will also fail cause the cpu it will shut down the system instantly if it has no cooler working ..(gets to the shut down temperature in one sec or so ) If it seams that it is trying to start ..but , like I said , it shuts down ..just try to change the fan ...but it may be a issue with the power supply or the motherboard as well...

Dell opitiplex 280 is not giving display. first of all his fan speed to much high and then after 4 or 5 day its display disappeared. its just picking now power and fan also start with high noise and...

OK, I use GX280s as home servers and ran into a similar problem with one of them...

The problem may be serious and not worth fixing (motherboard).

Turn power on
Fan(s) come on full power, sounds like a jet engine, or eventually gets that loud.

See if you power light has gone amber.

You get nothing on the screen, no Dell splash screen/post, nothing.

This is what I posted a while back concerning the above. Obviously I cannot bee 100% certain as I do not have your box in front of me. This a known issue.

--------

See if the power light goes amber after power up. I had (have - still siting in my basement) one that did same. Power up, fans go full blast . Power light goes and stays amber. This is USUALLY caused by bad capacitors on the mother board. Known GX280 problem going back. If you look on the motherboard, the capacitors should have flat tops and not leaking. If the are rounded or leaking, the MB has probably gone bad. Bottom line this is usually a defective motherboard. Mine was a bad caps issue, you issue could be different, but it does sound like the motherboard.

You can google "gx280 solid amber light loud fan" and see the issues. Here is one link.

I just replaced one of my old 280s with a dual core Dell Precision 390 workstation for about $118, and that included shipping, off of ebay.

We have around 30 units of DELL Optiplex GX280 having mother board failure. It was more then 3 years old already. Once the turbo fan become noisy then it will gone dead.

May be serious. See if the power light goes amber after power up. I had (have - still siting in my basement) one that did same. Power up, fans sound like 747 taking off. I obviously can not be 100% sure about this as the unit is not here.

Amber light flicks once or twice no sound from fan or anything? What do we need to do

If the power button is a solid amber it is likely a motherboard due to a failed capacitor (Check the capacitors on the motherboard see if any tops are bulging)
If flashing amber, most likely a failed power supply

Amber light solid. Replaced the power supply ad the cmos battery. removed the memory and reconnected. Plugged back in and I hear the fan running kind of loud (louder than before) Still solid amber light

most times i have seen amber light, if it is where the pwr light is on front of tower means ur mother board might be fried. check capacitors one by one and make sure none are extended or leaking. dell has had this issue before when they sent out a bad batch of capacitors. may last it job was mostly issues with this. good luck.

Amber light on start button of Dell Dimension 4500

This is one of three things.

1. Bad Power Supply - Check to see if the fan is spinning
2. Short in the the wiring or Bad piece of Hardware - Check wiring make sure none of it is damaged. Disconnect one component at a time and try powering the PC on.
3.Badmother

Try steps 1 and 2 and if those do not work it is a bad motherboard.

This from a Dell certified Technician.

Dell 4700c will not power on white light on motherboard

Hi,
Is there any chance for you to check if the power supply blows air from inside of the power supply? If yes, on your motherboard, do disconnect the P1 cable or the main power supply cable that connects to the motherboard and the P2 cable which. and try to plug the power cord of the power supply and if the fan did not spin, power supply is the one causing the problem

You may also try to remove the RAM or memory card module from the motherboard and all of the PCI card connected to the motherboard. Try to turn on the system and check the power supply fan and the CPU fan if it will spin. If not then I recommend you to replace the power supply.

On the other hand, if the fan is spinning on the power supply after you remove all the RAM and PCI cards. And the power button light is flashing amber or solid amber color. Try to install RAM 1 by 1 to isolate the problem.

Let me know if the problem persist

Solid amber light on front amber on mother board

Hello,
take the PSU (Power Supply Unit) from a known working computer, preferable to be the same model and test with it. when you do so make sure you disconnect any peripherals e.g ( Printer, CD-ROM, Floppy).

Look closely at the memory bay for any bent pins, and test with one memory at the time.

Let me know if this is still an issue.
