If the hard disk is having a read error then it likely has damaged platins and the drive will need to be replaced. You can run CHKDSK /R from recovery console which will identify and block out bad sectors on the HDD but the issue will only continue to get worse till the drive is unusable.

Recovery/Restoration Disk

Yes, I read what you stated

In order to remove all your personal information; at least in the extent you have indicated; you need the Restoration Disk,
or a Full Installation disk. As in a new genuine copy of Windows.

Restoration Disk is a LOT cheaper than a new genuine copy of Windows.

[Microsoft makes one Master disk. From it all GENUINE copies are made, and sold to the consumer]

Going with information from the US;
The disk is free

The shipping and handling is not

$17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
Call 800-474-6836
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Have the Serial Number written down to give to the nice representative.
This is located in the white Service Tag, on the back of the desktop computer.
S/N = Serial Number

Restoration disk installed, when you are asked choose Full Install.
Destructive Installation

Takes the computer back to Day 1 from the factory

All your personal info is gone

Now let's talk a minute
Your personal information isn't really gone. Even with a 'shredder' program that writes 0's and 1's, hundreds of times over the information on the harddrive, the information is STILL retrievable.

FBI and other agencies, have pulled info off of harddrive's that have been used by drug cartel's, that the computer was in a purposely bombed out building.(Drug lord/s did it)

The harddrive's were BADLY burned, but there was still enough info left.
Bye-bye bad guy's.

To TRULY get rid of any personal info on a harddrive, take it out, smash it with a hammer until very flat, and then burn it.
MAYBE this will do it.

What are the chances of someone, who has the know how to remove your old info?

Really?

Hard disk sector problems

Yes, and maybe.

How's that for a clear, concise answer?

When using the Restoration Disk, or a fresh new Installation Disk; if there are bad sectors you will be advised that CHKDSK, is about to run. (Or instructed to use CHecKDiSK, and how)

CHKDSK will then see if there are good sectors that it can move info over to, OR; you will be advised that you have an irreparable hard disk. (Harddrive)

Reformatting is using the Restoration Disk, or Full Installation disk; and when asked choose Full Install.
(Destructive Installation)

Do NOT click on Format in ANY other way.

USE the Restoration Disk, or Full Installation disk.

(Otherwise you will wipe the harddrive clean, and you do NOT want to do this)

Is there a download to fix the hard drive

To physically repair the harddrive if it has bad sectors? NO.

There is a method whereby the harddrive will skip past bad sectors, and move the information to any good sectors there are, but this is a band-aid fix.

I would get the Restoration Disk, and choose Repair. (Non-Destructive Installation)
Then copy off ALL personal info to disk/s or flash drive/s.

Programs WILL NOT move over. (Can't copy) You have to manually install them again, or download them again, on the new harddrive.

Which leads to; After copying off all personal information, FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions, computer unplugged from power, and install a new harddrive. Then use the Restoration Disk to reinstall Windows.

Don't have the Restoration Disk/s?
In the US the disk/s are FREE. The shipping and handling is not.
$17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.

Bootable device has not been dectected

When the PC cannot see a boot file/disk on either thehard disk or floppy drive it gives an error message "No bootable device. Insert boot disk and press anykey" First thing, check to see if the is a floppy disk inthe floppy drive, if so removes this disk. If there was no disk in the floppy drive then it maybe a hard disk problem.
Check the BIOS to see if the hard disk is detected, if not open the case andre-seat the data cable on the hard drive and also where it connects to themotherboard disk controller.
If it still gives this error message and the BIOS does not detect this harddrive, then the hard drive is probably faulty.
A further check on the hard drive, remove the hard drive and connect it to anUSB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port, if thiscomputer does not detect it as an external storage device then the hard driveis faulty.
To get the computer operating again, install a new hard drive in your computerand then install Windows on this hard drive plus the computer's devicedrivers and your programs.

"A disk read Error

Hi,

It looks like problem with your Hard Disk Drive, your drive may have bad sector on it. You may have to remove yor HardDrive and connect it to other computer using converter cable which you may get in market or local computer shop to backup your data. If you already have backup with you, register call with acer support website and get it replaced free if under warranty.
If this laptop is not under warranty, you may have to buy new harddrive and replace it and restore your Operating systems, programs and data.

Hope this helps.

I have a HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX PC Desktop. But I have a problem you might be able to help me out with every time I try to start up it,s a black-screen and error 256 comes up and just constantly...

FIRST OF ALL, I suggest you buy an external enclosure, take the harddrive out of your Mom's computer, and install it in the enclosure.
(Before some nimrod deletes your Mom's files!)

The external enclosure has a USB cable. You just plug the USB cable into another computers USB port. Any available open USB port.
Copy her files to disk/s, or flashdrives.

The HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX desktop computer, comes with an IDE harddrive. (160GB)

IDE is also known as PATA.

Desktop harddrive's are 3.5 inches across in width.
(3 and 1/2 inches)

You need a PATA 3.5 external enclosure.

This is one example of a PATA 3.5 external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1337265&CatId=2779

(After you have recovered ***********'s information, you can install another harddrive in this enclosure, and have an external harddrive.
More storage space.
Plus it is portable.
She can take it anywhere)

Second of all, DO NOT DO A SYSTEM RESTORE!
(Not shouting)

If she does not have the Recovery CD Disk/s, then it is suggested to purchase them.

The disk/s are free.
The shipping and handling is not.

In the US it's $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
(Business days, not weekends, or holidays)

Call this toll free number in the US, 1-800-474-6836

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact/phone_assist.html

Put the harddrive back into the computer, after you have copied ***********'s info off.
Start the computer.
Open the optical drive, (CD/DVD drive), put the Recovery Disk 1 in.

Go through the screens.
When you are asked, do a NON-DESTRUCTIVE INSTALLATION.
This is a REPAIR.

(Do Not do a Destructive Installation. That is a full install)

Have questions I'm right here. Post in a Comment. (I'll lead you step by step. Suggest you forget about your 'tech' friend)

Problem with harddrive

It could be because the disk is not a part of any array. Log into the server and go to the array controller utility from HP and check for any unassigned disks. It will be displayed there rather than the diskmanagement window.

I keep getting tossed into Protection error or Blue Screen!

The harddrive from another computer, with an O/S installed on it already, is the problem.

Am I to assume the harddrive you're trying to install, has Windows for an O/S?

Microsoft's Users License states, "One GENUINE copy of Windows per One computer"
The genuine copy of Windows on the harddrive you're trying to install, has already been Activated on the computer it came out of.

(Microsoft has a Master disk of each Windows O/S. The copy the user obtains, is a copy made from this disk. It is then a Genuine copy from Microsoft. If it isn't a Genuine copy, it is an illegal copy)

When Windows is installed on a computer, it assigns 'codecs' to major hardware components of the computer.
Think of these 'codecs' as serial numbers, for the hardware components.
(No computer owner personal information is recorded. Just THAT genuine copy of Windows, to THOSE hardware components)

Some of the major components are, Processor, Harddrive, Motherboard, (More specifically the BIOS program and version, that's on the BIOS chip),
and Graphics chip. (GPU)

Change two or more hardware components, and a 'red flag' is put up. 'Codecs' do not match for the AOpen motherboard, and the hardware components on it.
(Different BIOS program, different Processor, and different GPU)
Therefore, it is believed to be installed on more than one computer.

Easiest solution would be to buy a full installation disk of Windows, and install it.
[Also go into BIOS Setup, and in Boot Order, set the first boot device to CDROM]
