Question about Garmin StreetPilot c550 GPS Receiver
It worked just fine and I turned it off. I could not turn it back on. Charged it for a while, but it still does not turn on.
I had this same problem - the unit doesn't turn on.
I took the silver bezel off the front, and found that there were 4 screws holding the thing together, and that there was a reset button on the front. Reset button didn't do anything, of course, in my case, but after opening the case I found the culprit:
The board which has the charging unit, mic in, and line out on it, with markings
94V-0", "172-7", and "01067-00 V8", had blown a component on the board - it was black right next to where the line plugs in for the speakers and the battery. Looks like there's a 6 pin tiny component which looks like a relay or a pROM like a SPD chip on memory. Unfortunately, I don't see any markings on this. I think a solution would be to get a similar unit which uses the same charging/IO board and swap it - bad/cracked screen would be a perfect candidate. The other way would be to figure out how to get the particular part from Garmin themselves, because I'm not really into fixing surface mount solder points.
