Thanks Mark. It is a 1G flash memory stick that I got at a conference as a giveaway. When I do a properties on it, it comes up with ST96023AS. Does that sound familiar? If you could find a driver for it, that would be a great help. Thanks!

Yes, you are correct. My mistake. The only other USB device listed in My Computer under removable disk is called: USB Flash Disk USB Device. There is an inscription on the outside of the Stick - 0532 THNU2256MS1B - ADKK. Does this help? Thanks!.

The only other USB device listed in My Computer under removable disk is called: USB Flash Disk USB Device. There is no manufacturer name listed at all. Manufacturer = (standard disk drives). ? any other thoughts or suggestions?

I downloaded the file but there are many cautionary statements to back up my entire system and the like...A little nervous to load the driver..Should I be nervous or not? I have other usb devices plugged in like a webcam.

Most memory sticks require you to download a separate driver for use on Windows 98 machines. All driver downloads are free, and you can find a camplatible driver on the website of the manufacturer of your memory stick. For example if your memory stick is a Sandisk, you would go to the sandisk website, click on support, drivers and downloads, select your exact product and select the correct driver from the list provided.

On some memory sticks there simply aren't drivers available for windows 98. Lets hope this isn't the case. If you want me to look for the driver and provide a link, give me the manufacturer and model number of your memory stick and I will be glad to help.

Good Luck!

I'm assuming you have the memory stick plugged into a laptop computer, because the serial number ST96023AS is a Seagate 2.5" 60 GB internal hard drive, usually used in laptop and notebook computers. The drive you want to look for in the My Computer window is listed as a Removable Disk.

Another thing, usually flash drives will have the manufacturer listed somewhere on the drive.

  • Mark Kessler May 31, 2008

When I did a google search on that serial number nothing came up.

    Try this:

When you right click on the device in My computer, then click on Properties, then the hardware tab, there should be a device listed as a usb device, this item should provide the manufacturer name. The list I am refering to will also have the hard disk serial number that we discussed earlier, plus devices named generic usb device. These generic devices are ports located on your system. The manufacturer name will help tremendously.

Ok, Here is a link where you can download generic windows 98 flash drive drivers. These drivers are supposed to work with most devices, you just have to know the version of windows 98 you are running. The website explains how to find that information as well. I hope this works for you.

A good step in downloading a file from the internet, is to scan it for viruses before running the installation. Right click on the executible file and click scan with your virus scan software. If your virus software does not detect anything then it is ok to install.

I have an installer called Maxim Native USB for Win98Se only. It works fine with various memory sticks and cameras. I'm only just connected to the web, haven't (yet) a Email-account. I have a Hotmail adress. I found it on the web years ago, and would like to pass it on. Help me to upload it somewhere for you to grab it. Greetz, Marc at

  1. Maxim Native USB installer. Installs a generic USB INF, which lets you work with Flash Memory, Camera's etc.
  2. The problem: I'm connected to the web, but have failed to set my Email-account. No E-adress yet.
  3. I will try to get a Hotmail adress, and report back to this site soon.
  4. I'm Dutch, so please be patient.

Unfortunately, there are no drivers available for windows 98. Most of your memory sticks will not work on windows 98. Your best bet is to burn your files on a CD and use that instead.

USB Memory stick

Sandisk usually sells memory sticks that are backward comaptible with win 98, but more than likely you will have to go to their website to find the driver because it will not be included. I have a 256 MB memory stick from sandisk that also has a driver for win98. I know this because I've used it on a win 98 machine. Once again, I had to go to the support page on the Sandisk website to find the driver.

As for the upgrade, you can probably upgrade to XP for $200 or less, without having to upgrade hardware.

Copying files over to Laptop

It's possible to get Windows 98 to recognize the USB memory stick, but there will be several technical problems to deal with.

A much simpler way may be to remove the hard drive from the tower and connect it directly to the laptop with an external USB-to-IDE adapter. In this configuration your files can be copied directly from the old hard drive to the laptop. Depending on your comfort level with working on the internal parts of your computer, you may need assistance from someone with computer service experience to do this. One example of the device you need is the "Bytecc BT-200 USB to IDE Cable with Power Adapter"....or you can search online to find this or similar devices by using the search terms USB - Hard Drive - External - IDE - Adapter. They are generally available for under $20.
