Fan not shutting off

We had a service call done yesterday on our refrigerator. The problem was the sealed system lost its freon. The tech installed a new compressor, freezer coil and another part. Everything works except the fan runs all the time. How do we fix this

The one in the freezer seems to be running all the time. I am not sure if the compressor is also running all the time or not.

    Thanks

Which fan runs all the time? The one inside the freezer compartment or the one in the back that cools the condenser?

The freezer fan will run at all times with the exception of when the system is in the defrost mode. This is a normal condition. The air circulation fans use very little power and are of low wattage. The fan by the compressor cycles on and off with the compressor.

Defrost mode on some models is every 8 to 12 hours. Some models go by the amount of door traffic ( openings and closings).

I'd be willing to bet a chili-dog dinner that your refrigerant piping system has sprung a leak. Your symptom is classic for this problem.

The charge you mention is the refrigerant, commonly known as "freon".

We look for a "temperature Differential" when diagnosing refrigerant systems. The difference between the upper temperature and lower is due to a lack of or leak of "freon".

A normally filled refrigerator will more likely have a smoother temperature differential. Not as definitive a difference like you mentioned.

Refrigerant pumps into the refrigerant piping system from the compressor and fills the piping in liquid form, liquid freon, then dispersing into vapor as the heat is absorbed. That's thermodynamics 101, but don't memorize that.

There's a couple things you can try to restore the performance.

You've already cleaned the rear coil, the condensing coil, so there's really only one thing left to try and that is the cooling fan itself. Some fridges have 'em, and some don't.

If yours has one on the outside bottom the fan should be turning when the compressor pump turns on. You'll hear them running or see the blade turning.

If it doesn't have a fan outside, then you're most likely course is to get the leak fixed and recharged.

When calling for service and you suspect a refrigerant leak; make sure and ask the service company how they seal your fridge or air conditioner. Get the guarantee in writing.

I use liquid sealer installed inside the refrigerant piping. Like your car's radiator and leak sealer. Seals from the inside out. I guarantee for life, they might too.

Let me know how this turns out.

This sounds like a typical freon leak, and you haven't lost much from what I can tell. Any decent AC or Fridge tech can recharge you for a nominal fee. Just be sure to shop around for the best pricing. I recommend an AC specialist since they won't overcharge you the way a Sears appliance tech would.

I have a GE model# GSH25JFXJ that I have had for around 3 months and have only been able to use it for a total of about a week. The freezer works ok but the fridge side keeps getting warmer even all the...

1. If you are cutting the system open, like installing a new compressor, repairing a leak, or install a new filter drier, yes, the system would be pumped into a vacuum, but just to add refrigerant, no you can add some without pumping the system into a vacuum.
2. If the freezer side works, the sealed system should be fine. On most refrigerators, all the cooling takes place in the freezer, and the fan in the freezer blows some of that air into the refrigerator section to cool it. It sounds as if you have an air flow issue. I would check the air dampner at the very top back left side of the refrigerator section to see if it is stuck in the closed position, preventing air from entering the fresh foods section. (air exits back out the bottom left back into the freezer compartment)
3. If this unit is indeed under one year old, call GE to request they dispatch a different service tech to assess the situatiion. Try 1-800-386-1215.
4. Oh, almost forgot. The proper factory charge of refrigerant in the system is listed on the model / serial number tag. It will be listed as something like 3.2 or 4.15 Oz (or similar amount) of R-134A. Once extra refrigerant is added or removed, the only way to get an acurate charge is to evacuate the entire system (into a vacuum) and re-charge it with the exact amount of refrigerant.

The above will take you to the installation manual for your unit. This is to make sure you have set up the unit to their specs.

There are multiple things that can cause a lack of cooling. Let's cover a few of them.

1: Make sure the condenser coil under the unit is clean. You have to be able to take a flashlight and see light through the coil and fins. Be sure unit is off when cleaning. Use vacuum, compressed air, or a long, stiff bristle brush and go with the fins direction so they do not bend over.

2: The termostat may be set wrong or is not working as designed. Look for the compressor and fan on the condenser to cycle off when temp is met and on when it gets too warm. If unit is running all the time, look for frozen up evap.

3: If evap is frozen up, no air can pass through so no cooling is taking place. Air can not go through a solid block of ice. Clear ice with warm water. Again, make sure unit is off first.

4: Door not sealing or closing all the way. Seal on door should have magnets that help seal them to the door frame.

5: Again, if unit is running all the time, as in #2 above, unit may be low on refrigerant (freon). If you suspect this to be the case, have a qualified tech do the repair. Make sure he locates and repairs the leak. Adding freon without the repair means he will be back to do it a second time. The system is a sealed one and you should not have to continually add freon.

Good Luck and hope this get you going.

Hotpiont side/side HSS251FMB not cooling

Compressor might be working but you may have lost some freon. Continued operation with low freon can lead to other problems. This may require a service call since recharging freon can only be done by a service professional.

Freon can still be used but only by service professionals. The 134a coolant is not compatable with the old freon system without changing the seals.
