Question about Canon PIXMA MP530 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Open Question

I have a Cannon MP530 that works great for me, but I have a nagging problem that I can't find a solution for. The other day the Large black ink cartridge was reading out and the printer wouldn't print. I needed a single page printed asap, so asked it to override the ink monitor. I got the following message: "The function for detecting the remaining levels of the following ink has been released. Black [5]" Now I need to Re-Enable the detecting mechanism for the Black #5 cartridge, and can't figure out how to do it. I've shut off and turned on the machine, unplugged it, and replaced it with a brand new OEM Black cartridge.

SOURCE: Refilling Ink in Canon Pixma MP830

Hello, I found this in a repair manual for the MP830. summery is to press and hold the stop/reset button for 5 or more seconds. I copied the info from the manual too. The remaining ink amount unknown. [1683] (Applicable ink tank icon) The remaining level of the following ink cannot be correctly detected. An ink tank which has once been empty is installed. Replace the applicable ink tank with a new one. Printing with a once-empty or refilled ink tank can damage the print head. If printing is continued without replacing the refilled ink tank, press the Stop/Reset button for 5 sec. or longer to record the use of a refilled ink tank. Note: After the above operation, the function to detect the remaining ink amount is disabled.

SOURCE: Ink leak?

It's not the cartridges, the waste ink is coming up thru the bottom to the exit rollers. The only fix is to have a shop open it up, clean up the ink mess and install a shield that stops the ink from coming back up when it should go to the absorbers. The new machines all have this shield and the ink tube cut back to make the ink go where it should.

SOURCE: I need a new print head

Check if the service station proper covers the black nozzles when the printhead is parked. Sometimes the mechanics change its position and the printhead dries out.
Try to unclog the nozzles with very hot water. Sometimes it helps. The new printhead is very expensive and you may want to buy a new printer instead.
Remove the printhed, put it in a bowl with the nozzles down and fill with boiled water until the nozzles are covered. Wait 15 min and dry the electric contacts with a dry napkin. Good luck!

Printer won't make complete copy. Continues to

Cannon printers are notorious for clogged print heads using aftermarket ink. This has happened to me many times before I switched brands. Cannon won't even replace the printer if they find out that you didn't use Cannon ink. Epson and Brother have very good compatibility with aftermarket ink. Kodak are good as well. I recommend these because the cost per page is lowest with these printers AND I use them with great success.
