After months of use, your printer might get the habit of stopping in the middle of a page and showing "Hardware Error 0502" on the LCD display. If you leave the printer alone for a while, it might start printing again. Then again, it might not. Pretty annoying.

The Lexmark support site will let you power off, remove the power cord for 30 seconds, take out the cartridges and fiddle with some encoder strip. This whole procedure might take you up to 30 minutes and it will not help (been there, done that).

On the multi function machine seems to be a coating on the metal rod that the cartridges travel on. Just wipe the rod with a Kleenex and the problem seems to go away. Somehow it presents a drag on the cartridges and causes an error.

Clean that with a paper towel. The towel will be black from ink residue, but you will be able to print again.

Printer error 0502

The 0502 error code could be caused by an unseated encoder strip or a faulty cartridge. Please refer to this article Error 0502 on the Lexmark X5130/X5150/X5190 Pro LCD Display for the troubleshooting steps. Let me know if you need further assistance. Hardware error 0502

Hi,
Problem:The Shiny Silver bar that your Print Cartridges glide back and forth on is the problem. When the motor that moves the cartridges left and right have too much resistance, you get this error code 0502. Solution: Take some kleenex, and with power unplugged, clean the bar very well. Then Spray some WD-40 on a Kleenex, and lubricate the shaft. Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya.

Hardware error 0502, how do I fix this? What causes it?

It happpens when the Catridge is unable to Communicate with the Printer............. In this case what i would request you to do is............... Unplug the Power Supply from the Printer When u remove the cover of the Printer behing the Catridge carrier which holds the catridges u will see a thin long transparent strip which looks like a Tap........... Take a Dry Paper Towel and Gently wipe that tape from right to the left it is very delicate so pls do it gently............ Now Take out both the Catridges from the Printer.............. Move the Catridge carrier which holds the catridge, From right to the Left and From Left to Right for abt 10 Times............... Now u can insert both the catridges in and Turn On the Machine.......... Good Luck
