I purchased 3 of these from a computer recycle company. Both of them act the same. They play CD ROMS, Play DVD's, but when I go to burn it looks like it's going to happen, then a box appears "Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank discs".
I cranked it down to 8X with the same results. I'm using Maxell CD-R.
Any sugestions?

If the firmware was never updated, it can cause this.
A tool like Nero infotool will show the drive firmware version or you can scan your registry for "4481" and locate an entry in <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\DeviceClasses>
that shows the drive model and a numeric fw version.

You can go to HP http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=pv-28110-1
or to Dell http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Others/Dell-Dimension-8300-HLDS-GCC4481-B-Firmware-28012005.shtml
and use their firmware update.
