Question about KitchenAid P Series Trash Compactor - 15" - Black on Stainless Refrigerators

Open Question

Kitchen Aid compactor Model KUCC151GSS1, Serial # SK1263395. When ram is nearing maximum compacting mode on a normal one-half or greater load, it has recently begun to make a pulsating hammer-like noise (and fluctuating motor revs) that sound like maybe slipping screw teeth on one or both of the screw drives. It seems to be preventing maximum compaction by the ram and this occurs even when compacting only a few additional items at a time. There are no obstructions or trash items (past or present) that could account for this newly developed problem. Please indicate possible cause, solution, and an estimated cost for parts and labor. Thanks. John King, 925-256-8635.

SOURCE: Trash Compactor Problem

Had a similar problem with mine. I took it apart and found that the nut that is on the bottom end of the ram screw was loose. I tightened it and it fixed the problem. That was about a month ago. Now it is doing it again. I'm going to tighten it again this weekend and apply Loc-tite to the threads.

To get to the nut, you have to lay the compactor on its side and remove the plate from the bottom. You'll see a chain that goes around the motor sprocket and both ram screws. You need to tighten the nuts on the ram screws.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My KitchenAid trash compactor model KUCP021RBL1: cycle does't end

Hello,
Most likely the motorwindings have been overheated after staying to long time in down position and trying to get up.
If there is a Emerson motor in your compactor than you will not find anything wrong most likely it is the winding of the motor, we have had this two times, changed the motor and the problem is solved.

Kind regards,

SOURCE: kitchen aid mixer model K45ss motor just quit

Hi LCHESNEY, it sounds like you’ve got the mixer apart already to do your voltage checks. So my guess it that you’ve already determined that that (speed) Control Plate Assembly is not good and need to be replaced. Since you’ve already disassembled your mixer once I hope you have your mixer’s Parts List manual on hand, but if not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use K45SSW, and select the file listed under Parts List (1), K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB). Check to ensure it matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled: Motor And Control Parts, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Find Illus. No. 25, Control Plate Assembly, Part No. 240904-2.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.

Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able replace your Control Plate Assembly.
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

SOURCE: compactor will not close and latch.

you will need to remove the entire Drawer to see if somthing fell behind inside.

Most of the time you can pull the drawer all the way out and lift the front of the drawer and pull it out.

The "wheel" has a cracked center that you can not see unless you take the whole gear off.( I am assuming the "wheel" is off the motor and should be driving the chain that goes to the side gears ) There is a tension washer looking thing that holds it on and you can force it off with a flat screwdriver. Once off, I'm sure you'll see the center of the gear( hex shaped) is not engaging the hex gear shaft for being broken somewhere. An appliance repair store should have that part for less than $50. Sure beats the $85 the service people start with for just a service call.

Kitchenaid compactor KUCS03FTSS makes banging sound at end of cycle

I bought a Kitchen Aid trash compactor the end of Sept/2008. By July/2010 I have spent $528 on having it fixed! It only cost $623 new so I called Whirlpool customer satisfaction line where after waiting 15 minutes was told that "With all due respsect mam, Whirlpool owes you nothing" Then " as a courtesy" they offered me 50% off an $80 part that I still need to pay $60 in labor to install! So,that would be an additional $100 on an appliance that has been trouble from the get go...I have had numerous compactors before this brand and have never had any trouble...Do NOT buy anything made by Whirlpool as they have apparently, a NO customer satisfaction policy.

Compactor ram stuck partially down & door open 2 inches. How do I get the ram to go back up & get the door closed?

We just had this same problem. Your problem is most likely abroken plastic gear found at underneeath the bottom of the compactor. Pull out the compactor and turn it upside down. Remove the bottom panel and that is where we found the broken gear. We were able to retract the ram and open the drawer by manually turning the drive chain using an ajustable wrench. Clockwise is compact, counter clockwise is retract.

GE Profile trash compactor is stuck

This has happened a couple times to me and the fix is fairly simple. The problem is the trash ram is pushing down on the edge of the metal of the trash compartment because the door is partially open. The solution is to back-up the ram the the door will close.

To back-up the ram, you will need to pull the compactor out from under your cabinets and unplug it. Turn the compactor on it's side to expose the bottom. There is a plate on the bottom that covers the motor gears. Remove the plate and turn the large gear counter-clockwise to back-up the ram screws (at least this is how it works on my model works). The gears are a little greasy so you may need to add some after messing with the gears.

Good luck.

Here is an assembly drawing of your compactor.. Please note item # 102 ( direction switch) ..That may be affecting the perfomance of your motor or your motor may have a dead spot on the windings.. Here is a link to a website for parts that coincide with this drawing.. There isn't an awful lot to a compactor in terms of hardware so good luck.. Hope this helps..

GE Profile trash compactor

Sure is... The motor drives a ram up and down to compact your trash... Like most drive systems.. it needs to find a refrence position near the top of the stroke.. that position is normally sensed by a switch.. so it is possible your motor is bad or.. it is also possible your top sense switch is bad too.. For $400.. the GE tech should come out and stomp on your trash until it is compressed.... In either case.. if you are handy.. you may be able to open the compactor up ( with power unplugged) and check the position of the ram.. if it is near the top.. you may be ableto reposition it down a little then try cycling it.. It may buzz if the motor is bad ( windings shot) or it may work OK.. if it does and the problem comes back after you cycle it.. there is a good chance the top sense switch is bad or the windings in th emotor bad too.. Hope that helps...

the nut on the ram drive fell off for me and the chain fell off and then broke the grear drive. At 72$ each for the two ruined gears I don't know if I should try to repair it or get a new one.
