Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

I have a WD 500GB My Book Essential. It stopped backing up automatically, and I cannot manually backup by clicking the Run Backup button. I also cannot retrieve any files from my hard drive. I get an error message every time that says "Failed to find metadata for file." I have updated the firmware and software today and this still didn't fix my problem. I will be calling WD tech support a third time tomorrow, unless anyone else can help? Thank you, Frustrated and Fed Up. -Lindsay

SOURCE: Using my book essential edition external hard drive

hi,

you have to restore the backup with the same software that made it.
Probably this program is installed in your work pc and not at home.

SOURCE: Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive 500GB not recognising directory tree

Its the rubbish software that Seagate have bundled with their drive which will not allow you to backup the system folders. Solution is to use another backup utility, a google search will quickly locate numerous FREE software products which will alow you to copy anything. Unfortunately when you start googling about this drive you may be quite distressed about your purchase, as i have been :( Problems lay ahead with this drive due to inadequate cooling.....

SOURCE: The file system of my hard drive become RAW.

http://www.z-a-recovery.com/unformat-tutorial.htm

This tutorial describes the procedure to recover one volume when

  • the volume was accidentally formatted
  • Windows reports the volume is "raw filesystem", or "not formatted"
  • An external drive failed, either flash (so called "thumb drive") or an hard disk connected using USB or FireWire enclosure.
  • MFT is corrupt on the NTFS volume, rendering filesystem partially or completely unreadable
The recovery is done in seven steps, requiring about eleven (11) mouse clicks. Note: The older than current versions of ZAR might have been used to create the screenshots in this tutorial. We did not update the screenshots if there is no significant difference between older and current versions. If you see some option in the program which is not described in the tutorial, just leave it at its default setting.

When you run it, ZAR displays the window like the one below:

SOURCE: Can I use my passport

You can use your WD Passport to sychronize data on multiple computers, you just need to set up the other computer name (e.g. "Work computer")using the software.

WARNING: Do not think that theyourWD Passport, using the WD Sync software, is a
backup drive; it is NOT !

As per the documentation with this device:
"synchronization software is intended to synchronize the data from a
computer to the drive (WD Passport) and SHOULD NOT be used as backup
software. To use this software properly, we advise that you do not wipe or
erase the data from the internal hard drive (computer) and resynchronize, as
this will cause the data that WD Sync stored to the Passport to be deleted."

This is why you are hearing so many people saying that they are deleting the
WD Sync software, reformatting, and using the WC Passport as a true backup
drive where you can actually see the files that you are backing up, rather
than a bunch of unrecognizable sync files that likely don't have all the files that you thought you "backed up".

Download a program called discovery from WD, it is free. When installed, plug in the drive and run the discovery program. Your drive should work properly. Then you can download the backup program, also free. When you run that one it will guide you through the process. Please let me know how it works for you.

My computer has 2 drives (C and D). My WD Passport will recognize and backup the C drive, but it won't backup the D drive. It doesn't split the files into pictures/video/etc like it does with the C, and...

Well, you don't have to use WD's software...you can better backup software like Acronis..you can back any files you want, or, the whole computer with installed programs, operating system and all. Are you using WD software, or windows? You can just select the files you want to copy from the drive in Windows, and just copy them to the drive, you don't have to use WD software.

Want directions on how to backup to western digial external hard drive. We use microsoft vista and we have a 500gb external drive.

This may vary, depending on the software you use, but if it's Vista backup and restore, follow the steps below:
  1. Open Backup and Restore Center by clicking the 'Start' button, clicking 'Control Panel', clicking 'System and Maintenance', and then clicking 'Backup and Restore Center'.
  2. Click 'Back up files', and then follow the steps in the wizard (during this process, you will be given an option to select the destination for your backup - Browse for the WD drive in my computer and select it). You will also be given the option to select which files you would like to backup - You can either select everything or you can select specific folders (an option for browsing will be available), you may want backed up. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Hope this helps.

My external backup will not back up and to use I need product number.Where can I find it?

The my book essential only comes with a trial version of Memeo / WD Anywhere Backup, which can only be used for 30-days. Your only option to use the backup software with the drive, is to purchase it. However, you could use another software or alternatively manually copy / paste your data over to the drive.

If it's any help, windows also has a built-in backup and restore function.

WinXP - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup

Vista - Start > In the search bar, type: Backup. Open the executable.

Win 7 - Open my cumputer > right-click on your C-drive > select properties > select the 'tools' tab and select 'backup now'

External hard drive use 101!

When you plug the drive into your computer it should come up as a new drive letter (drive E: for example). To back up files right click onto the files that you want to backup and left click onto copy then open the drive letter for the my book and right click and left click onto paste. this should copy any files that you would like to back up to the I book to restore simply reverse the process.

Wd notebook/my book help

Hello purplebubble,

Purchasing the notebook for backups was a smart move. It's always good to have backups. When you plug the notebook into your computer, it will be assigned a drive letter like D:\ or E:\. When you open up My Computer you should see it with the other drives, like your CDROM, and C:\ Local Disk.

Go ahead and click on that drive and it will open to a blank page. That's ok! since you haven't put anything on it yet, it should be blank. When you create your backup, just make sure when the backup program asks you about where you want to place the backup, answer that drive letter, and the rest will take care of itself.

Good Luck, and don't forget to leave a rating.

Thanks Mark

Can I Repartition WD 500GB My Book Firewire Drive w/DATA ON IT?

Greetings.

You will need to have a third party software to achieve this. I recommend norton partition magic. I have been using it in the same scenario as yours and works. they now support firewire. Easy to use and gets the job done.

Hope that helps.
