When I turn the lights on the low beams go out. When I turn the switch to the center position the low beams work, but go out when I turned them on

Do you know anything about automotive electronics ? Electronic control modules .
Headlamp ON/OFF control is determined by the body control module (BCM) by a signal on the headlamp switch on input circuit when the headlamp switch is in the HEAD position. When the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position, the BCM determines headlamps ON/OFF by the voltage from the ambient light sensor.
If the headlight switch is left in the ON position, the inadvertent power control feature will turn OFF the headlights approximately 10 minutes after the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. If the driver places the headlight switch in the ON position after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, or if the ignition switch is in the ACCY position, the headlights will remain ON until turned OFF or the battery runs dead.
The high beam indicator is illuminated when the instrument cluster receives a GMLAN serial data message from the BCM that the high beams are illuminated.
High Beams
The high beam headlamps receive voltage from the headlamp high relay located in the underhood fuse block. The BCM controls the relay on the headlamp high beam relay control circuit. High beam control is determined by a signal on the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit from the multifunction switch. When the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit is grounded, the BCM grounds the headlamp high beam relay control circuit, illuminating the high beam headlamps. The right and left high beam circuits are independent and are fused independently in the underhood fuse block.
Low Beams - Standard
The low beam headlamps receive voltage from the headlamp low beam relay located in the underhood fuse block. The BCM controls the relay on the headlamp low beam relay control circuit. Low beam control is determined by a signal on the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit from the multifunction switch. When the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit is open, the BCM grounds the headlamp low beam relay control circuit, illuminating the low beam headlamps. The right and left low beam circuits are independent are fused independently in the underhood fuse block.

Hooking up a factory scan tool an checking DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes would be the very first step in trouble shooting this problem .

Hi my name is Larry I have a 1998 Pontiac sunfire & my problem that I have is I have low beam. But no high beam.


It's probably the switch , but testing to know for sure is alwasy a good idea .

Where is the DRL relay located?


There is no DRL relay , has a lamp control module .
The daytime running lamps (DRL) activate under the following conditions:

The ignition switch is in the RUN position.


?€¢
The ambient light sensor indicates daylight.


?€¢
The vehicle is not in the PARK position.

When the above conditions are met, the lamp control module (LCM) supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the low beam headlamps through CKT 589 (GRY), the DRL resistor, and CKT 12 (TAN). The DRL resistor reduces the voltage supplied by the LCM. The low beam headlamps light at a reduced intensity. The DRL disable if the vehicle is placed in the PARK position. When the ambient light sensor indicates darkness, the low beam headlamps automatically switch from a reduced intensity to a regular intensity.

Low beams dont work and only one high beam works


Do you know how to do voltage drop testing ? Leave the blubs in there sockets turn the low beams on , measure voltage on the power side , LH low beam yellow with black stripe an for the RH low beam dark blue wire . If you have battery voltage there, power side is good . Then check ground side both are yellow wires , test with lights on . if you see 6 volts , 12 volts .anything more then .03 millivolts you have a ground side problem . The lights ground through the light switch .
Low Beam
Voltage to the headlamp switch is available at all times from the HDLP SW fuse 7 through CKT 1940 (ORN). When the headlamp switch is turned to the HDLP position, the headlamp power relay coil is energized through CKT 352 (WHT). A signal is also sent to the body control module (BCM) that the headlamp switch is ON. When the headlamp switch is in the AUTO or PARK position, the ambient light sensor (located in the right speaker grill) senses either daylight or darkness and sends the signal to the BCM. When the Ambient Light Sensor detects a dark condition, the BCM produces a signal that will energize the headlamp power relay through CKT 352. The relay coil is grounded through terminal F7 connector 2 of the underhood fuse block to CKT 350 (BLK) to G102. When the headlamp power relay is energized the relay supplies power to the LT HDLP and RT HDLP fuses. The RH low beam headlamp receives current through CKT 198 (DK BLU) from the RT HDLP fuse. The LH low beam headlamp receives current through CKT 712 (YEL/BLK) from the LT HDLP fuse. Both headlamp low beam bulbs are grounded by CKT 524 (PPL) through the underhood fuse block to the multifunction switch (low position) contacts through CKT 10 (YEL) to the headlamp grounding relay in the body relay block through the normally closed contacts to CKT 1850 (BLK) to G200.

Low beams not working


If the bulbs flash when you unlock the vehicle, then they are likely not the issue. My guess is the relay contacts are dirty. Just because a relay clicks, it doesn't mean that it is passing current through the contacts. Try and swap the relay with another of the exact same part number. There's usually another available...ie the horn relay, fog lamp etc..

2006 Chevy HHR low beams do not work in auto or on positions. However, low beams flash when locking/unlocking the car using the remote. Also, high beams, parking lights, and turn signals all work fine. All...


Your running lights which come on when you are in drive should be the ones flashing when you use the key FOB to lock or unlock vehicle not your head lights. Although unusual maybe both low beam head lights are burnt out or a bad ground, that the only thing that makes sense to me.

Daytime Running Lights Inoperative 2002 Toyota Camry


[Information] For a 2002 Toyota Camry, the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) operate utilizing the High Beams (inner Lamps closer to the center of the vehicle front) at a reduced power.

[The troubleshooting process:] Review the Owner's Manual and ensure the test configuration matches the following criteria:
1. According to the 2002 Toyota Camry Owner's Manual (Check your Owners Manual):
"The DRL system will make your headlights come on at a reduced brightness when:
The light switch s in the "DRL" position.
The ignition is on with the engine running.
The headlight switch is off.
The parking brake is released."


2. Set the Test Conditions according to Step 1 above.

3. Check the headlight bulbs to ensure they are not burned out. If one burns out, there is a fair chance that the other would have burned out at the same time. Replace as necessary. In this case, if the high beams operate, the DRLs should also operate.
4. Test the system, ensuring the step 1 conditions are set. (Engine running, Multi-function Switch on Turn Signals in "DRL" position, headlight switch off (repeating what the manual says -- it should be obvious that in the "DRL" position, the headlight switch should be off / do not have the switch positioned to "High Beam"), and the Parking Brake "off").
5. If DRL lights do not work, check the engine compartment Fuse and Relay Box. there is a 5 Amp DRL fuse -- replace it with the spare. Test (step 4).
6. If it does not work, swap around or replace relays -- there are three (3). Any one of them could be bad (stuck or burned out). Test (step 4).
7. Other less likely possible issues could be that the Multi-function Switch is broken or a connection / wire is broken. [Beyond the scope of this process.]


My problem was that the test configuration did not have the engine running and parking brake off - Step 1. Problem solved with much thought, repetitive tests on the vehicle and going back to the basics -- what does the Owner's Manual say and where are the applicable fuses and relays located?
