he last years Microsoft has really worked hard to make Windows more secure. On of the things is only to allow certified drivers, and software of which the I/O can be controlled by the OS. Lots of programs can be used in the compatibility mode from Windows7 and 8, but check this for every program. Some programs can't even be started or installed on a modern Windows machine.

Windows Vista is a very demanding Operating system when it comes to system resources and it doesnt come as a shock to hear that you computer runs warmly, If you werent experiencing any problems when you had windows XP installed, I would suggest downgrading to Window XP, otherwise wait for October 22 and purchase a genuine copy of Windows 7 and use that.
