I'm not 100% sure, but you could try loading up Open Office. Its an open source word processing software package that opens virtually any 'document'. The neat thing about that is that you can then turn around and re-save it (your document) in the format of your choice.
Better still, Open Office is absolutely free. At least this has the potential to be a quick 'free' fix.
