That is the compressor trying to start and not getting started...

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

The freezer is not getting cold and the water is dripping down the back onto the coils and it is causing a sizzling sound and smells like it is burnt. How do we fix.

Turn it off before you burn your hose down. Nothing should be so hot as to make a sizzling sound! There shouldn't be any water on the outside of the unit. It sounds like there is leak.

If this unit has been in operation for a while, like a couple years and longer -- the coil that is under the unit is most likely completely matted up with dust. This needs to be cleaned. With the unit off use a vacuum cleaner, brushes -- any way you can devise to get rid of all the accumulated dust.

Because I can not think of what water could be dripping on to make a sizzling sound - or where that water be coming from - I'm going to suggest you call in a professional on this one.

There shouldn't be any condensate that can drip on anything. The clogged up coils underneath could cause the freezer not to cool properly.

A burnt smell sounds like electrical - and that's why I'm concerned.

I hope you unplugged your unit or tripped the breaker. If they are bright red then you have an electrical short that should have tripped the breaker a long time before they turned red hot.

My refrigerator stoped cooling and freezing. The lights and the fan come on, but will not cool...

Hello,

The first thing I would do is remove the cover on the back of the fridge and check if the compressor is running. If it's not, then it could be the start device. Remove the power from the fridge, pull out the start device from the compressor and shake it. If you can hear something inside is moving, replace the start device.but if otherwise then,
Your defrost timer located inside the control panel is bad OR the defrost thermostat located on a freezer coil is bad.
Get down low and look up at the bottom of the control panel.
You will see a small round hole. Onside the hole is the defrost timer advance knob.
Use a flat blade screwdriver and SLOWLY turh the slotted knod clockwise until the refrigerator clicks off.
Wait a few minutes then open the freezer door and listen for a sizzling sound from the freezer compartment.
If you do hear a sizzling sound that would be the defrost heater melting ice.
If you do not hear a sizzling sound, unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear freezer panel to expose the cooling coil.
Clipped to the coil will be the defrost thermostat. It will need replacing.
If you do hear the sizzling sound the defrost timer will need replacing.

Good luck and hope this will work

My side-by-side refrigerator freezer, the coils in freezer ice up, and the refrigerator section get's warm. What is the problem?

OK'Lets start with the defrost timer located below refrigerator and front kick plate. Turn timer until it cklick into a position that stops fans and compressor. Leave like this for about 30 minutes. Listen inside the freezer for sounds od sizzling or crackling sounds the sounds of defrost. If timer does not automactically come ou of defrost turns gently again clockwise until the compressor starts. Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

Falling water hits something hot in freezer and causes sizzle sound

the sizzling noise is water hitting the defrost elememt and this is normal - shows the defrost system is working. if water comes on the floor of the freezer, this may be the drain for the defrost water is blocked. remove the freexer back panel and the drain is in the tray where the defrost water is caught. if it is blocked - usually with ice - clear it with hot water and make sure the water drains freely. takes some patience and maybe several attempts
