Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

1 Answer

I recently installed a new Badger 5 garbage disposal in the kitchen sink. I has worked great, but a few days ago it started making a horrible sound when it is turned on. I sounds like there is a spoon or something in there, but it is completely clean and there is nothing there. Any ideas on what this could be? Maybe a blade loose or something?

Likelyhood of loose blade is very low, but not impossible.
Get a good light and a small mirror, something is jammed inside, I bet. Often a piece of somthing gets lodged in a dischaged port and the blade hits it evey rotation.

Is there a way to bypass the disposal to be able to use the sink w/o the water dripping from the bottom of the Badger 5 disposal?

If disposal is leaking, it has to be removed before it damages cabinet and causes mildew.
Then install a different strainer basket if you want to connect tubular drain.

You can also buy same brand and size disposal and install without changing sink basket.

I have installed a garbage disposal under my sink (Badger 5). It is not new, about 2 years old. Brought it from my old house. It worked great before moving it. I wired it in myself. It works when turned...

Smoking electrical device is probably not good news. It implies electrical short.
Freely spinning cutter disk means the sealed motor bearing did not rust out and bind the motor.
Smoking disposal means minimum of melted insulation and overheated motor.
Overheated motors will slow down and stop working.
What caused it? Maybe moving disposal around loosened something.
Decades ago household items were taken to the electric shop and they rewound the motor.
Today metal and copper is landfilled or scrapped to other parts of the world.

Garbage dispoal not working. The blades spin freely inside, the reset button has been reset, when you switch it on the moter makes a faint humming sound, and the allen wrench will not rotate either way.

You need a new disposal.
Free-rotating blades show there is no obstruction.
Humming says you have power.
Frozen allen wrench says bearings are rusted.
Motor is now overheating each timer electricity is turned on, and motor will overheat and stop humming.
At least the drain is clean and water is not flooding under the sink, which means you can continue using sink until disposal is replaced.

Badger 5 EX 3/4 Hp In sink Erator

the disposal is attache to the button of th sink by means of ring and clamps.
take a look how th ekitchen sink is mounted. the disposal is mounted the same way. you may need to get new rubber seal and a new plate for the buttom, where the screws is. you can take the ring to the near home center of plumbing store, and get a replacement.

you can use "plumber's putty", or " goop" .thing else will keep the water out.
