Question about Poulan PP4218AV 18" Chain Saw

1 Answer

42cc 2cycle poulan chain saw does not start spark plug fires has fuel, fuel in fuel lines seems there is some blow-back in the carb when I turn the engine over don't know much about chain saw motors, if this was a marine 2-cycle outboard I would suspect the reed valve had failed. See no reed valve in the parts list from Poulan. Suspect one of the carburetor "gaskets" performs this function (the vitally important one-way valve into the crankcase that forces fuel to move from the carburetor into the crankcase and ultimately into the cylinder in a 2-stroke engine). 1) What performs the function of the reed valve in a 2 cycle chain saw engine? Is it a carburetor gasket/part of some sort? 2) Will ordering a set of carburetor gaskets from Poulan fix this problem? (they have 2 items called "kit-carb" in the parts manual, no additional specification). Thanks

Here is a Link to a couple of my Tips. They should solve your problems:

I don't know anything about outboard motors, so I can't answer the reed valve question. There is a needle valve on the diaphragm side of the carburetor though. Maybe these two parts perform that operation.

Good Luck!

Modle 2075 Replaced fuel hoses now wont start, It has fuel and fire. What should I check now?

Was it running before the replacement of the fuel lines? Does the primer bulb fill with fuel when pumped? Did you replace the line inside the fuel tank? Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Hope this helps!

I have this saw and really like it. Does the the primer seem to work? Most problems on these saws can be traced back to cracked fuel lines. Either tank to primer, primer to carb, or carb return back to tank. I would recommend it the saw it more than 3 years old to replace all the fuel lines. Total cost about $5. Buy your fuel line at Ace Hardware.

Pouland chain saw won't start, seems to not be getting spark

1) How have you determined that there is no spark?
2) Have you used a type of spark tester?
3) What is the condition of the plug. Brown or dark brown is OK. Black or silver is NOT Ok.
*If you do not have a spark tester,
a) remove the plug, and with it connected to the wire,
b) find a portion of metal around the cylinder that you can ground it on, and then pull the rope.
c) If the plug is black, you may see spark, but you should replace the plug.

*** PLEASE NOTE ; if there is excess fuel in the cylinder or on spark plug,
it can catch fire, so be carefull to cover the hole with a heavy rag so that any fuel
cannot be exposed to spark plug durning test !!!!
Get back with me on how this issue works out.
thanks, rwvanlue
Basics to check:
1) Spark plug - brown or dark brown - OK
a) is it carbon or fuel fouled
b) is there spark

2) Muffler remove for inspection
a) exhaust screen clean or plugged
b) inspect cylinder wall/piston as the flywheel is slowly rotated
3) Check cylinder compression

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition
Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) spark arrestor in muffler
3) fuel lines and tank filter
4) turn adjustment needles out (counterclockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 turn
Chain Saws:
5) check impulse tube and intake boot for cracks or leaks
*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
6) replace gaskets/diaphragms
a) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb
b) fuel pump diaphragm goes against the carb body,
then the gasket towards the outside
c) metering gasket goes against the carb body,
and the diaphragm goes towards the outside

Poulan 18' model 2000 chain saw, quit running , will not start.

If you have a compression gauge, check the compression. Anything under 90psi is too low.

Check your flywheel key. If it is broken the flywheel will move and not fire at the correct time.

Note: if it does not sputter with carb cleaner then it's not your carb.

Next:
Remove your exhaust manifold. Look into the cylinder with a flash light. You are looking for scratches. Anything larger then a light fingernail is definite proof you need a new cylinder/piston assy.

If it passes that test do the following:

Pour mixed fuel straight into your cylinder until 1/4 full. Slowly pull your saw over while looking into the cylinder. If you see bubbles after the ring/rings go by then you need a new cylinder/piston assy. On rare occasions if no scratches are present on the cylinder wall or piston, you may be able to change just the rings.

I havent used the chain saw for a few years and and not sure how to get it started...any help would be appreciated It's a Poulan Micro XX5 Deluxe and i'm looking for a manual...

Check fuel lines for stiffness & cracks'
Replace filter,plug,and fuel mixture.
If your lucky it might run.
If not check spark .
If spark is ok you may need to clean and rebuild carb making note of screw settings.
Also pull muffler and check for carbon build up.

My Poulan 3500 chain saw will not start

My guess is that one of your fuel lines has a crack or small hole in it. Inspect these and replace if needed. let me know how it goes.

My poulan wont start any suggestions

Plugged fuel line or carb due to sitting with fuel in tank. Drain tank and back flush line, changing filter if there is one. Inject some compressed air into fuel line from carb.jet screw hole, thus blowing out line toward tank. May have to also use some carb.cleaner in same area.
Prevention: Always shut off fuel line and run carb dry before storing unit. If storing a long time, remove all fuel as gasoline will not keep long, esp. in the carb.
Best wishes!
