Question about Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator

1 Answer

My TI-89 will not turn on or respond in any way. The last time I used the calc was 4 months ago. I tried to turn it on a few days ago but it would not work so I changed the batteries. That didn't work and neither have any of the solutions mentioned online. What can I do?

Take out one battery. While holding the "On" button, put the battery back in. I can honestly not explain what happened, but it has happened to me multiple times as well. You might have to do this more than once, but within a few attempts, it should start working again. Tell me how it works out, and hope this helps!

This still didn't work. Do you know of any other solutions? Since I bought the calculator in February, do you know if Tx Instruments will replace it?

I cannot tell you for sure, but if so long as you didn't do anything outrageous with it (dunking it in water or throwing it against a wall), and you have the paperwork that came with it, you have a very good chance of getting a replacement. Sorry that I can't be of more help.

OH! I didn't think of this one. Turn it on, then try to lower the contrast as much as possible. What might be happening is that it does turn on, but you can't tell, because the screen is too light.

My ti89 calc is not working since a year what is the problem? how can i solve in india?

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and hold the 2ND key. Tap the Up-arrow key several times and see whether the screen becomes legible.
If that doesn't do it, please respond to this thread and we'll go on from there.

My TI-89 calculators finance app is giving me the wrong answers by a few 1000 or so and increases how far off it is the larger the figure

Make sure your decimals are set to the correct number.
And also you can perform a factory reset on the unit to make sure all is back to normal.
Just be aware that it will delete any information which you have stored into your calc.

After using the TI-89 and changing modes several times, you may set the calculator back
to all default modes by pressing 2nd 6 (MEM), F1(Reset) and 3 or by highlighting
3:Default and pressing ENTER. To reset all memory press 2nd, 6 (MEM) then F1(Reset)
and select 1: All.

My ti-89 screen is frozen and wont accept input

Remove the batteries and wait a minute or two. Put them back in and turn the calc back on and it should function normally. Check for stuck buttons as well, as sometimes they will cause the calc to appear "frozen".

The TI-89 Titanium calc. purchased in Oct. 09 won't turn on

Try to increase the contrast
1. Turn it on
2. press [2nd] and release button
3. Press [UpArrow] and release button
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until contrast is adequate.

If that does not work use the link below to install TIConnect software
Install it on your computer and run it to oppen the main Window. Then connect you calculator to a USB port and, in the TIConnect main window Click the TIConnect TIDeviceInfo. It will try retrieve the info.
If it does your calculator is fine.

If it tells you Device Not found , Click communication settings in same pop up window where it said Not found, and Select Device, Select Cable, Select Port and try OK..

If all that does not work, then it may be time look for a repair shop.

If you are lucky and it works, you should reinstall the OS, which can be downloaded from You drag and drop the OS on the TIconnect main window. Calculator must of couse be connected to computer.
Hope it helps

Ti-89 Doesn't Turn OFF!!

1) Update the OS from the TI site.
2) check if button is sticking(not necessarily just the plastic button, but what it hits on the inside... you can clean the contacts on the inside of the calc with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol.)

I don't have much experience with this specific calculator but those are my best bets.

good luck
