Question about HP Compaq Business Notebook NX9010

1 Answer

I have 233mb of space left on a 37gb hard drive. Everytime I boot up it will (after loading personal settings) slow down to nothing. I would like to make more room on the hard drive by removing some programs. but I can't get to that point. It just slows down so much nothing happens!

Do you know how to access the settings for your paging file (portion of the hard drive used like it was ram)
my computer>properties>performance and memory>page file
reduce the size of your page file, this should free up a bit of space to work with.

This laptop is very slow

Slowness in the laptop can be due to many reasons. You may upgrade your processor( to i5 or i7), but that will be too costly. Try increasing the RAM of your laptop. Also don't overflow your hard drive. Decrease in free space on your hard drive will ultimately slow down your laptop.

When a computer takes time to start what do you think is the problem.

Uninstall (not simply delete) all unused applications. These programs take up space on the hard drive and reduce the area for temporary files and load the Windows registry with dozens or even hundreds of file that need to be loaded at boot time. Both of these situations can drastically slow a computer down during boot and while running.

Perform some disk "housekeeping". Run Cleanup to remove old temporary and orphaned files, cookies, etc. Read the directions carefully before using.

Run the Windows Disk Defragment Program. It is a tool for each hard drive. This program consolidates data and free space so that the disk has large, unbroken blocks of unused space to write temporary files - and makes reading data easier as it can be found in one place - instead of having to hunt all over the disk to find it.

Remove existing and prevent future "****" from collecting by using Ccleaner aka "**** cleaner". When run and set up correctly, it will remove and prevent accumulation of junk files and spamware. Again, read directions carefully and allow updates to the program for maximum protection.

Lastly, install a good Anti-Virus program. Norton stuff is very good, BUT can slow a machine down considerably. Other choices are Avast (free "Home" version available) or Viper for about $30. Both are very good to excellent and have minimal impact on the computer speed.

Doing these few items should help a great deal - please rate this reply and good luck!

When my Maxtor basic External Hard Drive is conected my PC won't boot up.

Verify in the BIOS setup (usually accessible by pressing F2, F12, or Del at boot), "Boot Device" submenu, that the system isn't programmed to also boot from an external device. If it is, it will try to boot off the Maxtor, but won't be able to since there's no OS there.
The system should be configured to start off the internal hard disk, and optionally the CD-ROM. Other options (ROM BIOS, PXE, USB, etc.) are usually best left deactivated or at lowest priority.

How do I access my external hard drive on my lap

I think you should first set the parameters on the BIOS to boot on USB first then second to the internal hard drive. The lappy should have this capability first. And could support that storage space.

But a word of advise. Since it is 180GByte it might be very slow to access the USB boot. It should be almost the basic setup for the OS installed on the external drive. And an XP OS is much faster to load, as for me.

When you want to boot on external drive plug the external drive and power it before booting the lap. When internal don't plug the external, after booting plug it if you want to access as external drive.

Hope it helps.

Getting slow

Disks seem to go slower as they fill. There is a general rule to never let a drive get down to 10% of capacity. Defrag regularly. Some freebies are better than the windows defrag program such as JKDefrag.

Slow to load games and play movies

Most common things.
1. First check how much memory you have left on your hard drive. If most of the space is taken up, as painful as it is, you may have to delete some files.
2. If you still have most of your space available on the hard drive... check for overheating, it may be a foresight for the red rings of death.

Hello. Your games wouldn't run slow even if you only had 1GB of memory left. The only time the hard drive will cause a game to run slow is loading a saved game. Anyother time it would have no effect.

If you have doubts, run a PS3 restore/quick format. That will clear everything, even the hard drive. OR you can put in a different hard drive.

Most likely your laser is dirty, disks are dirty or scratched or the laser is getting ready to fail.
