No you need a data card. Most likely you will want to consider ordering one of the prepared cards from garmin. Here is the steps on the page I gave you that say you can't use the bluechart card
What do I need to get started?

    * IBM-compatible PC running Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system, and an Internet connection.
    * Garmin USB card reader with drivers installed.
    * 16 MB (or larger) data card. (Cards used for data backups or programming of MapSource products can be used, but all existing information on the card will be erased. Please note: Pre-programmed BlueChart cards cannot be used for software updates.)
You may want to contact garmin directly about this problem:
    http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/home/su...
    Thank you,
    Lee

Yes a reset is always the first thing to try, I assumed you had already attempted that because your original question was asking how to load a "fix". I am glad to hear you got it working.
    Thanks again,

My Garmin GPSMAP 178C screen backlight failed

Backlight problem: Remove the display, remove the light tube from behind the LCD. Buy a led panel from Ebay for around $5 and install it behind the LCD under the drfusing layers. Run the wires out to a 12 VDC source and there you have it.

GPSMAP 178C Sounder GPS Receiver: My 178C will not stay powered up. I just replaced ...

I had the same problem with mine. It is caused by a crimped wire on the internal harness inside the machine. I opened it up and discovered that when originally put together 3 of the wires from the plug were crimped. One was broken off. The only way to fix it is to open it up, restrip the wires place a piece shrink wrap on before you solder it back and then make the shrink wrap flush with the back of the plug and heat her up. And, Voila... no more intermittent operation. Hope this helps? John

Garmin 178c won't find satellites

It would appear that your Garmin has no clue as to where it is on the planet. I think a trip to the owner's manual:

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP178CSounder_OwnersManual.pdf

might be your best bet to help initialize your unit. The info on how to graphically initialize your Garmin can be found on page 5.

Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck!

Garmin 178c turns off on it's own.

Hi

Sounds very much like the wiring plug connections in the back, always overlooked but so important that connections are tight and contacting.

I have a Garmin 178c map/sounder and it will not load up my BlueChart Data Card. I bought a new card, thinking that would cure my problem, but it didn't. I would love to get your input what steps to take...

I have the same problem. Did you ever figure out why it was not loading? There are no software adjustments to be made. Just plug in the card and wait. It says its reading the card, but never goes any further. Let it 'read the card' for hours with no luck. Help!!!
